Shut Down does not work

When I shut down or restart my computer I get the Shutting Down... screen
and that is where the system gets stuck, nothing futher happens. I have to
either use the reset button or shut down by using the power button.

Is there any way to correct this?

JP

Re: Shut Down does not work

Hi JP,

You need to isolate the hanging process. Do this by opening Task Manager
(right click the taskbar and select it), then selectively end active
processes prior to initiating a shutdown. When you are able to do so
correctly, you'll know that the problem resides in one of the processes that
was terminated. You can also use a tool like Process Explorer to accomplish
the same thing:

Re: Shut Down does not work

Hi Rick

Thanks for the information. This looks like a very long exercise, ending a
process at a time and shutting down! Perhaps I should try ending, say,
first 20 processes and shutting down and if it works ok then try and find
the culprit in those processes.

Re: Shut Down does not work

I ended all the processes (relating to the user logged in) I was allowed to
and restarted the machine but this has made no difference, the machine still
hangs at Shutting Down screen.

Anything else I can try?

This i one of many, many problems that I have with Vista. I wonder which
unpaid Beta tester the Screamer Ballmer will blame this one on? I will
install 7 as soon as my new external drive arrives from Newegg, as I
don't have complete trust in my older two. I certainly hope it is hugely
better than Vista, the worst operating system I've ever used, excluding
perhaps an early release of DOS for the IBM 360, which IBM replaced very
quickly and for free, unlike you know.....

Re: Shut Down does not work

To be fair, Vistas has been working quite well for the last 6 months or so.
When did you have this problem and was there no way to put it right? I have
Windows 7 installed as a dual boot system on my machine and i am
reinstalling all programs etc (could not upgrade Vista Ultimate with Win 7
Home Premium) so hopefully will be able to ditch the Vista installation
soon - guess this is what Ballmer & Co are hoping for.

It might be your power supply. If you have another good one handy, swap
them and see if it shuts down properly.

Goody for you. It must be nice to not have trouble with the naightmare
called Vista. There wouldn't be so many problems if System Repair hadn't
been thrown out. Right now my Search command has disappeared--a huge
loss in trying to convert to 7.

I can't see how it can be the power supply, there is no problem shutting
down the Windows 7 installation on the same machine!

Hi,

Use the button to 'show processes from all users' or the utility I listed.

I recently tried the Zone Alarm Security suite (it was a free offer) on my
Vista computer and ended up uninstalling it because Vista refused to shut
down....just wondring if you have recently installed a Zone Alarm product
or similar?

Logically it might not be a process related to your user account, so click
on [Show processes from all users] and work through that list. The risk is
(i.) some processes you can't kill and (ii.) killing some processes might
cause problems for windows, such as some things no longer working.

> Anything else I can try?

As an alternative, try shutting down services instead, as it might be a
process related to a service which is causing problems.

When you do find the offending process please post back so others can
benefit.
