Problem with Windows Media Player 12

Hi everybody,

I installed Windows 7 a few days ago. Eveything seems OK except for Windows
Media Player V 12, which doesn't seem to be able to play mpeg files.

is it "normal" ? Should WMP normally play such files? Should I download some
kind of extra plug-in? If so, is there any free plug-in available?

many thks in advance for your kind help.

with best regards,

Daniel

Not really, is there an error message you could Google ?
Does Media Center play them - right-click the file, open with Media Center.

Re: Problem with Windows Media Player 12

Hi Whs,

many thanks for your message.

I installed VLC as you suggested, and indeed, VLC plays all my .mpeg video
files.

Again, my files cannot be read neither with Win Media Player nor Media
Center.

does it mean there is something wrong with Windows Media Player on my PC ?

thks again,
Brds

Obviously. Do you get an error message when you try to play a file?
If you do what does it say ?

Re: Problem with Windows Media Player 12

Daniel,
are you sure you're having problems with .mpeg files or mpeg2 files? Both
are normally converted into .vob which is DVD format. None of the Windows
Media Players come with that codec. Did you happen to have PowerDVD
installed on your computer, but forgot to reinstall it when you upgraded?
If you did, then just pop in the disk and install it. You'll have no
further problems. If not, download Media Player Classic. It plays
everything. Your last option is to install an outside codec pack such as
KLite Basic. That will allow WMP to decode mpeg's. This should only be a
last resort, though. Inexperienced users can accidentally change all their
file associations is this is installed incorrectly.

Re: Problem with Windows Media Player 12

Thank you so much for your kind and detailed answer.

What you write is most interesting. Indeed, before doing the upgrade to Win
7 (just an upgrade, not a full install) I had some DVD player installed on
my PC (Was it PowerDVD ? I just cannot remember). And, strangely enough, I
cannot find any trace of this player since I upgraded. All the programs I
had are still there, except that one, so it seems. How come, I wonder ?

Now, before the upgrade, I could read any video file. I have the feeling I
could read them all in Win Media Player V11, but now I am not sure of
anything. Could this PowerDVD have installed a codec pack in WMP to allow
the playing of Mpeg files ?

Do I understand from your message that WMP 12 cannot read any mpeg file?

coming back to this PowerDVD or similar utility I had before, I just don't
know how to reinstall it, for I have a Dell DVD with all the utilities and
programs that were delivered with the PC, but I have the feeling that it can
be used only reinstall everything.

Thanks in advanc efor your kins help.
best,
Daniel

Re: Problem with Windows Media Player 12

You should have a few Dell disks. Look for the one marked Applications.
PowerDVD automatically installs the mpeg codec so you can watch DVD's. Pop
it in and see if PowerDVD is listed. My Dell came with PowerDVD, but when I
formatted it I found out Dell never gave me a disk to reinstall it. I went
with the Klite codec pack.
