Any any clues as to why vista (home edition) does not seem able to install
Avast AV home free edition?

Having downloaded the setup.exe file and received the registration key, my
laptop gives a "there was an error while completing the setup process"
message.

Any settings in vista need to be changed to allow installation?

Try another download of Avast. It should install. If you still have
problems with it you might try MSE from Microsoft. It's getting very good
reviews and is also free....

I had a problem installing Avast at first when I ran from the internet
(clicked the Run button rather than Save). I then downloaded to my hard
drive, then ran the setup.exe from there and that worked.

Perhaps if you try again, it'll install. I'm using avast!
successfully.
