Automatic restart for updates

This is incredibly annoying. Without warning, my computer (Vista home
premium) will shut down to perform updates. It restarts, and things like
word documents may be preserved thanks to autosave, but any other work is
lost.
Is there some way I can either turn this off, or at least get it to display
a warning telling me it's about to do it (in however many seconds, say)?
It's somewhat disconcerting and unfriendly (to say the least) to find one's
work and windows suddenly disppearing from the screen...

I've searched online, but can't seem to find references to this specific
issue.

TIA

See:
Using Windows Update in Vista

Then choose the best method for you, in other words, don't install updates
until you're prepared to reboot. Simple.

Perhaps "Notify only" would be more appropriate.
