Can someone, anyone PLEASE answer........

I need to know how to stop Vista Home Premium from locking up when I right
click on a file in a folder. Why is this constantly happening? It's
becoming annoying to the point of making me dread doing some of my work
where right clicking is necessary. PLEASE.... how can this problem be
solved?

Re: Can someone, anyone PLEASE answer........

Hi, Val.

From what you've told us so far, there is NO WAY we can help you. :>(

We can't see your computer. We can't see what you are doing BEFORE you
right-click the file. We can't see what kind of mouse you are using. We
can't see any error messages that might pop up. Heck, we don't even know if
you have a laptop or a desktop computer - or a Sony or an HP - or if you
built it yourself. We don't know if the computer is new or if you've had it
for years. We don't know if this problem just started or if it has been
happening for months. Et cetera...

We want to help users. That's why we volunteer many hours a week in these
newsgroups. But you must help us help you.

Thanks for telling us you are using Vista Home Premium; many users don't
even mention their Windows version. But please give us at least a basic
description of your computer, such as make and model. Tell us WHICH file in
WHICH folder - or does it happen for all files in all folders? Are you
browsing to the file in Windows Explorer? Or opening a file from within a
program, such as Microsoft Word? Are other programs running in the
background at the time?

I could think up more questions, but this should give you an idea of the
kinds of information that will help us help you.

Valorie

Would love to help you but as R.C. pointed out we need details .Maybe the following
few links that I included below should explain on what and how to post to get proper
help. If you can take the time and read them then you will have an idea on what is
needed when you post so as we can try and help you and solve your issue.
Post back here (we will be waiting ) with the necessary info, Thanks Valerie

You have posted about this problem several times before
and had lots of advice. You seem incapable of following
any of it, especially regarding ShellexView.
If you don't understand basic technical terms regarding
computers then you are asking in the wrong place.
Get somebody who does have a clue, like your next door neighbour's
'nerd' son, to post here. It would be easier to talk to him.

Sorry, here's more info. Example: I open a folder of jpgs on the desktop
and right click on one for whatever reason. I get an error that the program
"This Application" isn't responding. Then the entire PC locks up. It's
constant now.

>We can't see what kind of mouse you are using.

HP mouse with the red light on the bottom.

We

It's a HP desktop about 4 yrs old. Well scanned for all crapware.

It's the HP Pavillon.

Tell us WHICH file in
> WHICH folder - or does it happen for all files in all folders?

It's mainly image folders I'm have problems with, though it does happen
occasionally when I open a text file. I mainly work with images, JPGs.

Are you

Both from WE and folders on the desktop. Nothing else in the background is
running most of the time. Sometimes an Image SW program may be running, but
not usually. I would love to get this taken care of as soon as possible.

Thank you for this excellent information. The only thing I can add to my
new post above is the HD is huge and only about 1/3 full. It has a dual core
AMD processor and 3 gigs of RAM. The problem started with an occasional lock
up when I used the right button. It became more and more common until it
almost happens all the time now. Mostly, but not only, when I open a folder
of JPGs on the desktop to work on, and right-click on an image. I work with
images constantly so this is awful and wastes a lot of time to say the
least.

Is there any way to know which are *not safe* to disable since there appears
to be hundreds in the list? I would take days to check them all one by one.

From what you've said most recently, I am guessing that your program that
looks at the jpegs is corrupt.

Try opening that ;program directly and using its file menu to open a jpeg
to see what happens. Also try another program, such as the free irfanview,
or the free Paint.NET. Try using open-with instead of run in the
right-click menu, and choose one of the other image viewing or editing
programs.

Perhaps it would be helpful to see your extension and file type associations.
You could open an Administrator Command Prompt and issue:

assoc .jpg

This will show your current association of extension .jpg with specific file
type. For example on my computer (Vista Business) I get:

Microsoft Windows [Version 6.0.6002]
Copyright (c) 2006 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

C:\>assoc .jpg
..jpg=jpegfile

So in my case .jpg extension is associated with file type of jpegfile/

Next see which command opens specific file type:

ftype filetype

where filetype is obtained from output of previous assoc command. For example on
my computer I get:

C:\>ftype jpegfile
jpegfile=%SystemRoot%\System32\rundll32.exe "%ProgramFiles%\Windows Photo
Gallery\PhotoViewer.dll", ImageView_Fullscreen %1

In my case files of type jpegfile are opened with a/m command which invokes
Microsoft Photoviewer applications and passes option and filename to be opened.

Finally - you may want consider uninstalling completely and reinstalling
application which opens files of type jpegfile.

Hope it helps,

Jan M. Nelken
