Driver_power_state_failure

Often my system crashes with the error message "DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE.
Error number 0000009F.
This happens when the system is idle for a period of time. I have "never
sleep" set up as my power saver options. Usually, it kicks in the screen
saver but these days it often crashes before it goes to screen saver. I also
had a system freeze with error message "Login process has failed to create
the security option dialog. FAILURE - SECURITY OPTIONS". This afternoon,
another strange error which said something like this: "picture in the slide
show did not load in the memory" and the system froze.

Any help will be appreciated.

Re: Driver_power_state_failure

In Control Panel choose Problem Reports and Solutions (type problem in
Start's searchbox), go to Problem History, right click your error and choose
Check For Solution. You can also examine the details.

In Administrative Tools choose Reliability and Performance Monitor and
choose MonitoringTools then Reliability Monitor (type Reliability in search
on Start) . This list is a chart of software installs, uninstalls, Windows
updates, and crashes by date. See if your crashes started happening after
you installed or uninstalled something.

Do you have an external USB storage device (drive)? I had one that was
failing, and if I left my system for any length of time with that drive
attached, I would get the DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE crash, never otherwise.

Re: Driver_power_state_failure

Yes I have an external hard drive but it is not always plugged in. I only
use it when I back up. Another point to note, when I disable screen saver,
it works fine. This problem only occurs when the screen saver is on. And it
crashes when it tries to invoke the screen saver. How do I fix the screen
saver if it is corrupt. The screen saver loads slide show in Microsoft
gallery.

Thanks for your kind response.
