| Re: Vista & XP Upgrade to Win 7 Hi, Win7 upgrade options: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/get/upgrade-considerations.aspx Note that while WinXP will qualify use of an upgrade version, it is actually a clean install and not a true upgrade. The Upgrade Advisor is a great tool and I had found that without any trouble. I will use it down the road, but right now I just need a estimate of how many upgrade vs. full editions that I'm going to need. For reasons beyond comprehension, we have a mixture of XP home and pro editions as well as a few Vista home and pro. The hardware is new enough that I don't expect a problem with drivers, but I need to learn, for example, if XP home qualifies for the upgrade edition of Win 7 Pro or will I need the full edition. | Re: Vista & XP Upgrade to Win 7 Thank you Rick. This is almost what I need. I had seen it before but couldn't remember where it was and couldn't hit the right Google keywords to track it down. Please let me reword my question slightly ... What previous editions of Windows qualify for me to use an upgrade edition of Windows 7 Home Premium? What previous editions of Windows qualify for me to use an upgrade edition of Windows 7 Pro? What previous editions of Windows qualify for me to use an upgrade edition of Windows 7 Ultimate? In all cases I will perform a clean installation. Thank you, Brian "Rick Rogers" <rick@mvps.org> wrote in message news:OXRJwx7VKHA.3720@TK2MSFTNGP02.phx.gbl... > Hi, > > Win7 upgrade options: > http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/get/upgrade-considerations.aspx > > Note that while WinXP will qualify use of an upgrade version, it is > actually a clean install and not a true upgrade. | Re: Vista & XP Upgrade to Win 7 I found the following link and info, dated June 17, 2009. It clearly states that Windows XP does not qualify for any upgrade versions of Windows 7. It appears that only Vista and Windows 7 are supported as delineated in the article. | Re: Vista & XP Upgrade to Win 7 See http://www.winsupersite.com/win7/ which should answer all your questions. Any version of XP or Vista qualifies for any upgrade version of Windows 7. It is just that only some upgrade paths, and from Vista versions only, can be achieved without a clean install. If you are running a business, you should check whether one of the business licence schemes available locally would give you better pricing. Alternatively, OEM copies might be suitable and cheaper. | Re: Vista & XP Upgrade to Win 7 From what I have been learning (thank you everyone), the discussion on upgrade paths in the link says that you cannot do an upgrade installation from XP to Win 7, but says nothing about using the upgrade Win 7 DVD to perform a clean install. It appears that any version of XP or Vista qualifies for me to purchase an upgrade edition of Win 7. But if I am moving from XP to Win 7, I must use that upgrade media to perform a clean installation. In fact the box includes a sheet from Microsoft giving you instructions on how to use the upgrade disk when your op system is XP. -- |
