Can someone clarify this pre-requisite to use Vista-->Win7 Upgrade Disk

For UPGRADE (not Full versions) to Win7 from Vista - do I need Vista
installed on harddisk and then run Win7 upgrade disk, or I can install Win7
upgrade onto a CLEAN disk - only providing Vista disk when aked for a proof
that I qualify for an upgrade?
Why asking?
It's a known fact clean install is a way to ensure perfection, whereas
overwriting existing older OS (Vista) with new OS (Win7) is a recipe for
complications later, clutter, slowness..
I want to wipe out harddisk and run Win7 Upgrade (not Fill) but afraid it
won't work if it doesn't find Vista on harddisk already installed?
Or can i just insert Vista disk when Win7 demands a proof?

I said I already had Full Version for myself, but now i am doing for boss's
Vista-loaded machine and we want to do a Clean Install, not overwriting his
Vista but just proving his opriginal Vista disk as a proof during
installation.

As I haven't had my hands on a Win 7 upgrade disk yet I can't answer that
either way, but if 7 is the same as Vista, you either have to have your
previous OS installed on the hard drive or use the 2 installation workaround
(search google for this method).

It's no big hassle to do the double install. Win 7 installs so
quickly that the whole thing can be done in less than an hour.
