Download Timeouts

Hi

I have Vista Ultimate 64, sometimes when I am downloading a large file
download does not finish and I get an error box that the download had timed
out.

How can I stop this, the sites where is happens do no support resuming and I
only have a slow connection.

thanks

Daniel

I can't imagine how this could be anything other than a problem with the
ISP or the download site.

If you are on dialup your ISP may be able to increase the time allowed for
inactivity (and a long download my indicate inactivity to their servers. It
happened to me a lot when on dialup.)

You also may try this to see if it helps. If you also receive email through
your dial-up account set your email program to automatically check for new
messages every 15 minutes and run the program in addition to whatever is
downloading the large file. This sends a command to the ISP that requests
info and "keeps the line open." My ISP years ago told me to do that and it
did help prevent timeouts.

If you are on a slow broadband connection you need to contact your ISP to
find out what is happening.

Let us know what you find out or if my little fix does work for you.

Maybe it's time to get "fast connection'?
The money you save, you lose anyway by sitting around waiting for downloads
to get done. whilst you could be making that money at work.

There's a free download of software that will allow one to download
large files in "pieces" but I can't remember the name. A friend sent
it to me a couple years ago and I can't locate the name. He used it
when he was using dial-up and downloaded large files over a several
day period. I might be able to find the name tomorrow when I've
rested. He might have downloaded it from CNet or Tucows.

Here ya' go...

BitTorrent, Azureus, uTorrent... these spread out huge downloads over
many sessions (several days, if necesssary).

"DownThemAll" is a Firefox extension that works with anything that can
be downloaded with a browser.

I believe these aare all free downloads. Should be easy enough to find
with a search.

Good luck!

Bill

Re: Download Timeouts

Thanks to all that replied, I do not have dialup but the sites I have
problems with allow only 6Kb/s for
non premium accounts, I will try the Firefox and the BitTorrent things.

Regards

Daniel

If you can locate a friend or even a library that has a better offering on
broadband download speeds, you could download the file at that location and
put it on a USB drive to take to your "slow" computer. Another thought that
may help.

Maybe you should save some money so you can open a trouble ticket with tech
support. They can help you change your PCs clock. I know that is way over
your head but tech support can help retards like yourself.
