Only Ten More Days to Go!

and you can download the new Ubuntu, Karmic Koala, Ubuntu 9.10 from
http://www.ubuntu.com/ and it's free and comes with access to thousands
of free programs!

What you can do with Ubuntu:

Email
Surf the web
Burn CDs.
Rip CDs.
Listen to music using the computer.
Watch vidoes/DVDs.
Scan and print.
Spreadsheets.
Presentations
Newsgroups.
HTML editing.
Games like Chess, Tetris, all kinds of solitaire, etc.
Make videos.
Download photos from a camera and organize them.
Translations from one language to another.
Use a dictionary program that's much faster than using a book
Learn how to touch type with a touch type learning program.
Edit images.
Send and receive a fax.
Take screenshots.
Create .PDF files.
Create and use a data base.
Instant messaging with over 10 different programs in one including
Windows Live Messenger.
IRC.
Bluetooth.

and much more!

What you can't do with Ubuntu:

Worry about:
WPA and WGA raising their ugly heads,
DRM,
Viruses,
Root kits,
Spyware,
and
Malware.

The reasons that Ubuntu is more secure than Windows are twofold:

1. When *anything* in Ubuntu needs updating or patching, it all comes
from the same source and a little orange star appears when any updates
or patches are available. It's a known fact that anti virus apps and
anti malware apps can only deal with nasties that are known, not the new
ones. Hence, it is very important to be updated or patched and not just
the operating system but everything that is installed on the computer.
Windows has no central updating source and the user has to be checking
constantly for updates to their programs or face the possibility of
being compromised.

2. In Ubuntu, when anything wants to install, you have to key in your
password. With Windows, you have to click on "OK" or nothing at all as
is evidenced by drive by malware. Unlike Windows, the Linux kernel is
not intertwined with a browser like Windows is with Internet Explorer
and the kernel is kept away and protected from the user account.

You make some good points, but when I have tried to use Linux I have always
come across an insurmountable problem, whereupon I give up and go back to
Windows. I tried years ago to have sound with Red Hat. I could never fix it.
I know that is old news and probably Red Hat is much improved. The other day
I tried to connect Knoppix live Cd to the internet for the umpteeumpth time.
I never could do it.

Try Ubuntu when the new version comes out and I think your experience
will different. Linux has come a long way in the last few years.

I got the new Ubuntu, Karmic Koala from a contact that I have to try it out . My
impression on this new version is that it is the same as the previous one but with
more eye candy and options. The version is very stable and works great but
unfortunately I am not able to use it for day to day work since all my clients are
working with PC in different flavors.
I have no idea if you have tried it but if you did not you will like the ease with
what you are able to do with it over the previous version.

Just my 2 cents about Karmic Koala

The final version isn't out yet. It will be released on October 29th. I
plan to clean install this time to take advantage of the ext4 file format.

? I think you forgot to change profiles before replying in opposition to

How bored do you have to be to spend time talking to yourself in an open

Doesn't matter which Alias generates the posts. Ubuntu is still **** and
will always be ****.

Remember that Ubuntu was written by geeks for geeks.

People try Ubuntu and reject Ubuntu 99.9999999% of the time.

Yes I believe it is, they couldn't get the butter add-on because of the cost

Not to worry though, it has got The Cube, wallpaper and e-mail!

Not much.

MS-DOS can email.

MS-DOS can surf the web.

With junk quality burning software.

Mostly rip-off copyrighted CDs is more like it.

Windows 95 can do that, Windows 3.1 for that matter.

> Watch vidoes/DVDs.

Ha! *Maybe* watch a movie.

> Scan and print.

If the printer drivers are compiled into the kernel. Even then you probably
will have to give up some of the printers features and functionality.

In second rate spreadsheet programs.

In second rate presentation programs.

> Newsgroups.

From the quality of your posts this is a dubious boast on your part.

Notepad can do that.

Cheesy flat games that smack of the Windows 3.1 days. Let's face it, if you
want to game, get Windows or an XBox.

> Make videos.

Sure sure .. again with second rate stuff .. good luck.

> Download photos from a camera and organize them.

Again, good luck. 'Hope the camera drivers are there.

Just visit Google dot com for that. A computer running Windows 95 can
achieve the same.

See immediately above.

You're kidding, right?

Let me guess, Gimp? It's almost pathetic how outdated it is. However Gimp
the one and only image editing software generally available to the Linux
crowd.

> Send and receive a fax.

Windows 95 can do that.

You mean Linux implements the Prt Scr key? So did Windows 95.

Up-to-date .PDF files?? Maybe.

> Create and use a data base.

MySQL anyone? Sorry, but Microsoft database software is superior.

> Instant messaging with over 10 different programs in one including

Linux only implements messaging so you can first ask each other how to get
things to work with Linux and then cry on each others shoulders when you
find you can't.

> and much more!

Yes, typical distros of Linux come with thousands of half-baked alpha-ware
quality junk that passes as "software".

> What you can't do with Ubuntu:
>

Bull. There's lots to worry about with UNIX and UNIX clones such as Linux.

> WPA and WGA raising their ugly heads,

Not likely if you don't steal your software.

> DRM,

or steal your music. Even then it is easily circumvented by not using DRM'd
music.

> Viruses,

Don't be so sure.

> Root kits,

UNIX and UNIX clones such as Linux are the origin of the term "rooted" LOL

> Spyware,

No?

> and
> Malware.

Sure sure. Linux is riddled with vulnerabilities. The errata List for RedHat
Linux (a premier distro) is as long as my arm and then some.

> The reasons that Ubuntu is more secure than Windows are twofold:

The only security in Linux is its obscurity.

Linux distros will often have lousy patch systems. Ubuntu's is probably not
all that great seeing as they've never come up with a good one for any UNIX
or UNIX clone such as Linux.

With ten zillion different distros out there and countless Linux libraries,
there's no "central updating source" in Linux. Whereas Microsoft does have a
centralized updating system for its software.

Bull.

Bull, because it is Windows 7 that has the modern security system, not
Linux. With Windows 7's version of UAC, many if not all privileges problems
are completely solved. With Linux's ancient system, it's the old problematic
"either / or" security system .. where one is either root or user.

Please don't cry because Windows 7 is better (as in way better). OK Alias?
Get yourself a kleenex tissue.

The people who want to steal Windows use cracked versions and are
careful not to let Auto Update download and install WGA. MOST people buy
their Windows with a computer so this anti piracy thing is a sham and
it's only done to confuse paying customers to pay again and for
Microsoft to have more control over the user. The ONLY people
inconvenienced by WGA are paying customers who get a false positive. The
crackers and thieves just laugh.

Hell, 7 is already cracked and ready for those who want it free:
