Why is it that these Notebooks only are available with WindowsXP? I am
looking to buy one with 2GB of memory....so Vista would surely run which in
time I would upgrade to Windows7.

I purchased Microsoft 2007 Small Business....... which installs with a DVD.
Notebooks don't come with DVD's. If I copy the DVD to a Flash
Drive.....would Small Business install from the flash drive? Or, as I have
been told in the past, Microsoft software cannot be copied...period...no
matter what you try to copy it to. It may copy but it will not run the
Install file. Is this true? How would I install Small Business onto the
Notebook?

Cause they are low-end PO****s.

Laptops handle Vista very well.

Get a laptop.

The Dell XPS line is quite good.

A wireless connection to your local network would work..

Also, you can go from XP to 7 without having to go through Vista. You just
can't do an in place upgrade..

Thanks; so to Clarify, I was correct that if I copy to a Flash drive it won't
allow me to install the software...correct?

Not sure how I would insert software's DVD in my Desktop and Install
software wireless (I have a Wireless Home Network) in the NoteBook....... I
realize I could purchase a USB DVD Player....but I am hoping to avoid that
expense.

You'd have to ask the folks that make them. Probably they can get XP
cheaper than Vista, even though that means they are limited to the amount of
memory and hard drive the unit can contain. But then again given the price
range for netbooks they would likely come with small hard drives and little
memory no matter what.

I believe you've confused 'notebook' with 'netbook'. What you describe is
generally referred to as a netbook - it's a lower powered device (often
no more than a 1.5ghz Intel Atom processor) and limited memory - your 2gb
is probably maximum. Why no vista? It would choke on it. They are
available with xp or Linux. If you absolutely need to install something
which is only available on a DVD, I suggest you invest in an external USB
DVD drive. Another option would be to install OpenOffice.org - it's a
free download from the internet. It may or may not do everything you need
from an office suite. It's quite MS Office compatible, imports/exports MS
Office files, etc. It does not support MS vbasick.

HP has a netbook with Vista Business with free upgrade to
Win 7 professional.

I am highly skeptical about this claim...

On a recently installed Windows 7 RC, the Windows directory is 24GB and
without going into any great deal, he claims to have installed it on a 4GB
USB drive.

Also, I think Windows resets the USB (bus) prior to taking control. As far
as I know, there is no mechanism for handing off USB drive from BIOS to OS
during the boot process in Windows.

So even if you had only the bare essentials to fit Windows 7 on a 4GB drive,
Windows would halt during the boot process.

Low cost, small size, small battery, video shares RAM, Atom processor, basic
video chip & system. (forget fancy games)
The Acer Aspire XP netbook I have can--
Have memory expanded by 512Meg for 2gig total.
Have the wireless card changed to be compatable with Apple's OS
Make a cellphone provider rich by adding a USB or internal cellphone
adapter.
(I just tether it to a "rooted" Android phone when all else fails)
Have the HD expanded from 160G
Run Linux
Run a "stripped down" version of Vista, with some problems due to drivers.
The small display is not really compatable with Vista "eye candy".
Later versions have a more standard resolution (1024x768) and a slightly
larger screen

To the thread originator-- bite the bullet, and spring for an external USB
DVD-RW, such as the HP dvd556s

If you should be able to copy the files from the DVD disk to a folder that
you can access from an already running version of windows on your netbook.
Then run the setup program from there. No need to have a DVD drive on the
netbook.
I have installed Windows 7 RC onto my desktop computer without having to use
my DVD drive. It’s a different matter though if you need to do a boot
install.

XP and Vista 32 bit editions handle exactly the same amount of memory and
size of hard drives. The reason they are using XP on these underpowered
pieces of junk is that they are just that, underpowered cheap POS that
people just seem to want and they don't have the horsepower to run Vista.
(I will admit that Vista is a POS too!)

Strange...

I rebooted my computer since the last message to finalize new video driver
install.

I checked it again and it's at 12.5GB...

I checked winsxs diectory (being the largest directory under Windows), and
it reported 12.5GB...

I double-checked Windows directory and it reported 12.5GB...

I re-checked winsxs directory and now it says 5.49GB.

So if I check it again a few more times, it will be small enough to fit on a
4GB flash drive. (JK)

After checking the disk usage a few more times, 12.5GB seems to be holding.

I'm running Window 7 x64 RC and I installed and updated all the drivers and
did all the Windows Updates except for the language packs.


I'm betting you're running Window 7 x86.
