| Only 19 Days to Go! and you can download the new Ubuntu, Karmic Koala, Ubuntu 9.10 from http://www.ubuntu.com/ and it's free and comes with access to thousands of free programs! What you can do with Ubuntu: Surf the web Burn CDs. Rip CDs. Listen to music. Watch vidoes/DVDs. Scan and print. Spreadsheets. Presentations Newsgroups. HTML editing. Games like Chess, Tetris, all kinds of solitaire, etc. Make videos. Download photos from a camera and organize them. Translations. Use a dictionary Learn how to touch type. Edit images. Send and receive a fax. Take screenshots. Create .PDF files. Create and use a data base. Instant messaging with over 10 different programs in one including Windows Live Messenger. IRC. Bluetooth. and much more! What you can't do with Ubuntu: Worry about: WPA and WGA raising their ugly heads, DRM, Viruses, Root kits, Spyware, and Malware. The reasons that Ubuntu is more secure than Windows are twofold: 1. When *anything* in Ubuntu needs updating or patching, it all comes from the same source and a little orange star appears when any updates or patches are available. It's a known fact that anti virus apps and anti malware apps can only deal with nasties that are known, not the new ones. Hence, it is very important to be updated or patched and not just the operating system but everything that is installed on the computer. Windows has no central updating source and the user has to be checking constantly for updates to their programs or face the possibility of being compromised. 2. In Ubuntu, when anything wants to install, you have to key in your password. With Windows, you have to click on "OK" or nothing at all as is evidenced by drive by malware. Unlike Windows, the Linux kernel is not intertwined with a browser like Windows is with Internet Explorer and the kernel is kept away and protected from the user account. Alias |

The other "interest" is being fed up with Vista and hoping that Win 7 will be better. Hence, my noble and sacred mission to spread the good word about Linux. Popularity is not a gauge of quality. Sarah Palin is a good example. McDonald's is another. Alias |

IIRC, MS has *never* offered a pre-sale deal like that. I'm sure many that jumped at the $50 price only did so because of the $50 price. I was going to as well, but never got around to it before the deal expired. |

The only ignorant one here it is you with your mightier than thou attitude which counts for nothing. What makes you right and millions of other people wrong? You should give the masses more credit as I bet the greater majority of them are far more intelligent than you. You are a condescending, envious person. Oh, I forgot to mention word biased, very biased. > Popularity is not a gauge of quality. Windows 7 is not McDonald's or Sarah Palin but it is quality, has popularity and will sell like hot cakes because of these reasons. Alisa |

> As for the discount, that's just good business. Except that is should be the regular price, or at least the regular price when you buy 3 or more licenses, or something similar to Apples Family Pack thing which I believe is ~$200 for a 5 licenses, which comes out to be $40 each. (http://www.amazon.com/Apple-Version-10-5-6-Leopard-5- User/dp/B000BR0NPO) Windows for 5 (NORMAL PRICING @ what....$129 for an upgrade) would be $645. But of course, who's got 5 MACS right ? Lots of people have multiple Windows PC's. I don't understand how lowering the retail price to maybe $59 or $69 for a single copy could be bad ? We're talking retail sales here, which is a very tiny percentage of total sales. OEM sales...to Dell/HP/etc, have to quite a bit less than $59/$69 already, so there should be any money lost via OEM's. Corporate clients don't just purchase Windows licenses, but other bundled things such as Office, and support, so there wouldn't really be a loss there either. It would be a win-win......Users would be more apt to purchase at a much lower cost, therefore more copies sold. Even if MS ended up breaking even as if they didn't lower the price dollar-wise, there would be more copies of it out there and running and installed on PCS. Looks good on paper anyway. |
