unwanted internet explorer windows

Hello,

I know someone whom is running Windows Vista
but from time to time gets internet explorer windows
popping up to various sites which we're not interested
in. However I have a computer which is almost exactly
the same and on mine it does not happen. How can
we prevent these windows from popping up when we
don't want them to. Is there a tojan or some virus
somewhere that causes these windows to load?
The computer even has McAfee antivirus software
installed. How can I fix this problem besides
reinstalling Windows Vista Home Premium
from scratch and hoping it fixes the problem?

Thanks,

John Goche

Download and run Ad-Aware (free): http://www.lavasoft.com/

Download, install, run, update and perform a full scan (separately) with the
following two applications (freeware versions are the ones to use for this):

SuperAntiSpyware

MalwareBytes
http://www.malwarebytes.com/
Download and run the MSRT manually:

After running all of the above reboot and let us know how you fared

Good intentions but get rid of Ad-Aware. Not that it does not function but it is
bloated so much that it creates other unwanted OS issues.
The ones to use today are as posted in my reply to John.

John, I just wanted to second Peter's recommendations above. These are
the two best available anti-spyware programs these days, and both are
considerably better than Adaware.

It doesn't hurt to also run Adaware, but you shouldn't rely on it.
