| Only 25 More Days to Go! and you can download the new Ubuntu, Karmic Koala, Ubuntu 9.10 from http://www.ubuntu.com/ and it's free! What you can do with Ubuntu: Surf the web Burn CDs. Rip CDs. Listen to music. Watch vidoes/DVDs. Scan and print. Spreadsheets. Presentations Newsgroups. HTML editing. Games like Chess, Tetris, all kinds of solitaire, etc. Make videos. Download photos from a camera and organize them. Translations. Use a dictionary Learn how to touch type. Edit images. Send and receive a fax. Take screenshots. Create .PDF files. Create and use a data base. Instant messaging with over 10 different programs in one including Windows Live Messenger. IRC. Bluetooth. and much more! What you can't do with Ubuntu: Worry about: WPA and WGA raising their ugly heads, DRM, Viruses, Root kits, Spyware, and Malware. The reasons that Ubuntu is more secure than Windows are twofold: 1. When *anything* in Ubuntu needs updating or patching, it all comes from the same source and a little orange star appears when any updates or patches are available. It's a known fact that anti virus apps and anti malware apps can only deal with nasties that are known, not the new ones. Hence, it is very important to be updated or patched and not just the operating system but everything that is installed on the computer. Windows has no central updating source and the user has to be checking constantly for updates to their programs or face the possibility of being compromised. 2. In Ubuntu, when anything wants to install, you have to key in your password. With Windows, you have to click on "OK" or nothing at all as is evidenced by drive by malware. Unlike Windows, the Linux kernel is not intertwined with a browser like Windows is with Internet Explorer and the kernel is kept away and protected from the user account. Alias |

> Surf the web Yes you can surf the web. > Burn CDs. This takes specialized software. You need to know where to look with Ubuntu. Could take you hours to find the right version. > Rip CDs. This could be done but not easily. > Listen to music. Sure. Put your IPOD next to your computer and you can listen to music. > Watch vidoes/DVDs. Not without specialized software. This could take you many hours to locate even if you know what you want. Try the TV and DVD player hooked up to your TV. Not with Ubuntu. > Scan and print. This is what your printer is for. > Spreadsheets. You can calclulate maybe 100-200 numbers. It will be slow. Open Sores software is not that smart. > Presentations Sure - Bring paper make many copies and pass them out to everyone in the room. > Newsgroups. Yes you can post to newsgroups. Alias does it so I guess you can also. > HTML editing. Very basic edits. > Games like Chess, Tetris, all kinds of solitaire, etc. Sure Ubuntu can run very basic LIMITED games. For real games you need Windows or XBOX or PS3. > Make videos. Sure. That is what your Video Camera is for. Making videos. You can't make videos with Ubuntu. > Download photos from a camera and organize them. Sure you can download photos. You just can do anything with them once they get to Ubuntu. > Translations. Yes you need to have many things translated before using Ubuntu. Ubuntu is not friendly so doing things will take you many hours. In Windows, it takes minutes. > Use a dictionary Sure - Take the dictionary off the shelf and look up words. > Learn how to touch type. That is what your keyboard is for. > Edit images. Sure - you can edit images to brighten the image. For more complex edits you need Adobe products - Try the Windows platform. > Send and receive a fax. This is what your printer is for! LOL! > Take screenshots. BFD. So you can take a screenshot of Ubuntu doing NOTHING. > Create .PDF files. Maybe. It will take you a long time to find the correct program to do this with Ubuntu. > Create and use a data base. Sure you can open a text file and insert data. > Instant messaging with over 10 different programs in one including > Windows Live Messenger. You want to run Windows Live messenger? Run Windows. Ubuntu sucks. > IRC. Maybe. > Bluetooth. With an hour or two of tweaking you might be able to get a simple device to work for a minute or so. > > and NOT much more! > > What you can't do with Ubuntu: > ANY REAL WORK |

In another thread, I asked you how to Kill File someone in the Newsgroups. You told me this: >Select one of the person's messages, go to Message/Block sender. That is >if Windows Mail is anything like Outlook Express. When you say 'Select one of the person's messages', do you mean just highlight the first and main message in the thread? Or do you mean that you can choose any message of that person's? Do you have to open the the message you want or just highlight it? I tried this on a message, but nowhere could I see the words 'Message/Block sender' where would I find this? Once you have actually blocked a person, if that person starts a thread, does it block the whole thread or only that person's messages? Also, if somebody else starts a thread and the person you blocked posts within that thread, do you not see just his message, or the whole thread? > What you can do with Ubuntu: > and you can download the new Ubuntu, Karmic Koala, Ubuntu 9.10 from > http://www.ubuntu.com/ and it's free! And This looks interesting. Do you download it onto Windows just like a normal download? Can you use it as a separate OS within Windows? Why is it free? It seems too good to be true. Sorry for all the questions, but I am here to learn. Thanks Nev |

In another thread, I asked him how do you Kill File someone in the Newsgroups. He told me this: >Select one of the person's messages, go to Message/Block sender. Once you have actually blocked a person, if that person starts a thread, does it block the whole thread or only that person's messages? Also, if somebody else starts a thread and the person you blocked, posts within that thread, do you not see just his message, or the whole thread? He could not be bothered to answer it. You know that Crappy OS that is on less than one percent of the desktops? Ubuntu has been free for years yet people reject it 99.99999% of the time.
