If you can't get to it in normal mode boot from the Vista DVD and run system restore from there. Click Repair your computer. In the System Recovery Options dialog box, click the operating system that you want to repair, and then click Next. In the System Recovery Options menu, click System Restore -- Rock [MVP - User/Shell] |

| Re: Windows Explorer Has Stopped Working Hey Thanks, Rock. One thing, though. I do not have a Windows Vista DVD. I downloaded it when I purchased it from Microsoft. Not to mention, I can't get the control panel to stay open long enough to choose System Restore. Windows Explorer closes it when it restarts itself. Any ideas? Thanks. |

Ok, try this, reboot, tap F8 to get the Advanced Boot Options menu, boot into safe mode, and run system restore from there. Or if you know anyone that has the DVD borrow one to run System Restore from the repair options. -- Rock [MVP - User/Shell] |

| Re: Windows Explorer Has Stopped Working Hopefully someone will have the answer. We just bought a new laptop last week with Vista and we are getting the same error: Windows Explorer has stopped working!!! It seems to be stuck in a loop!!!!!!!!!!!! Which means we can't do anything else.....help! |

| Re: Windows Explorer Has Stopped Working I am having the same problem. I did restart (over and over again) in safe mode and did the system restore and it didn't solve the problem. After windows explorer stops trying to restart, the desktop disappears and now even my internet launch button from the keyboard isn't working. I do know how to get to programs via the task manager. Are there any other ideas? Thanks! "krb" wrote: > > Hopefully someone will have the answer. | Re: Windows Explorer Has Stopped Working I'm having the same problem on a new Dell desktop with Vista -- losing Windows Explorer (and control panel and welcome screen, etc.) with it stopping and unsuccessfully restarting. Of six users, some have it all the time, some never, and some sometimes, and the symptoms change over time. It helped (reduced frequency, but didn't solve it) to reinstall the display driver (we have ATI Radeon 1300). And a workaround that worked for a while was to quickly try to log out when this occurred. That would cause another MS program crash, and we could then cancel that and return to the user account with Explorer then working. Mysterious. | Re: Windows Explorer Has Stopped Working I am getting exactly the same issue, i am very tempted to return the Dell to the manufacture, but am concerned that i will only get a PC with the same problem, if anyone hears how to get this fixed, please let me know, i have to say that i am not that impressed so far, does anyone have any idea how long these issues generally take to be resolved? all i want to do is use my computer, i have tried all of the restores, my PC will not except the DVD to repair the problem. do you think this could be a compatibilty issue with Dell? | Re: Windows Explorer Has Stopped Working I don't think it has anything to do with the brand of computer. It's all Vista. I just bought a new Acer Desktop, about 2 weeks ago, and about 5 days ago, this windows explorer crap started happening. I've talked to a lot of people who just bought new computers with their tax returns, and they say that they're having the same problem. What I want to know is what the hell Bill Gates is doing about it. Or anyone in Windows. It's crap. i work at home from my computer and this is causing a lot of problems for me. If anyone finds out how to fix it. Immediately e-mail me at angelsandairwaves6589********.com Thanks. | Re: Windows Explorer Has Stopped Working We speak here about two different problems: a crash of the windows explorer and a "disppearance" of the desktop. The first can have many different causes: a virus, a compatibility problem by some programs... The second has only one: Microsoft! It happens often when I install a new program or when I modify anything by the taskbar's properties or.... The only solution that I found: ctrl+alt+del, then log off and then log on. I hope Microsoft has already took note of it and soon delivers a patch. -- gop ------------------------------------------------------------------------ gop's Profile: http://forums.techarena.in/member.php?userid=28599 View this thread: http://forums.techarena.in/showthread.php?t=675708 http://forums.techarena.in |

If it's so, Norton and other programms that are not Vista ready install drivers und libraries, that ain't compatible with Vista. Try pressing F8 before Windows starts and select the choice to start Windows without loading other drivers than the basics of Windows self. Than uninstall Norton. If you have CCleaner or other registry cleaner programm, you may also clean the registry file of the Norton entries. Last isn't necessary, but a good precaution.
