Hi,

I have XP-Pro as my current OS, and I know (in the past) you couldn't do an
upgrade path from (for example) XP Pro to XP Home; I assume this is the same
in Vista. So, can I do a clean install with VHPU by a clean install over Pro
(I plan on this anyway)?

Ultimate is too expensive and has the extras I would never use anyway.

I just went from XP Pro to Vista Home Premium and had to use the "System
Builders" version of Vista Home Premium on a clean drive. I have both VHPU
and VHPSB. The upgrade would NOT upgrade from XP Pro to Home Premium and
would NOT do a clean install. It said you have to upgrade from within XP
Home (not Pro)

If anyone would like to buy my opened, but unused copy of Vista Home Premium
for $100, email me. I live in Delaware.

Who is Ivan? I really don't want a work around, just wanting to know if this

Tom:
As you stated you won't be able to perform an in-place upgrade. You
can perform a custom installation. All data from XP will be put into a
Windows.old folder which can be deleted later. The Vista installation places
an image of the operating system on the hard drive rather than copying the
files like XP and earlier versions.

Thanks Dennis,

I want to be sure about purchasing the upgrade version, since Vista flavors
pretty much offer what I need that XP pro gave me. I don't want to spend
more than I have to. If the upgrade doesn't work, as I planned on doing a
clean install anyway and will delete the .old folder with the XP Pro I
already have, then I willl install a full retail versin of XP Home that I
have had since it came out in late 2001. I just want to avoid having to do
an install twice.

By the way, is the "Windows.old" file you mention also the image of the
previous OS I will be replacing?

As far as I know, Windows.old isn't an exact image. Documents and
files from the old system should be accessible for transfer to the new
system. The article at [url]http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927522/en-us[/url] gives a
description of restoring a previous operating system. Have a great day.
