I have just purchased Vista Ulimate (1/31/7) at Sam's Club. The install went
very well. The overall experience is great, with the exception of copying
files. When I try to copy a file, I get "Windows Explorer has Stopped
Working" followed by "Windows Explorer is restarting.

So, I am unable to move/copy files. If I cannot find a solution quickly, I
will be forced to roll back to XP.

I get this to. I canot take a file on my desktop, do a cut of it, open
another explorer window and do a paste to c:\temp...what gives?

not only do i get this but even in safe mode no desktop as it times itself
out with the explorer is not working and restarting - 5 hours no help from
tech support.

Well, I did some more digging and found a utility called shellexview which
allows you to see all the explorer add ins and easily disable them. So I
disabled all non MS ones and things worked great. I then slowly started
turning them on and repeating my steps and found that Tortoise SVN was the
cause of the problem. I went to their site and sure enough, there was a fix
for this very issue. Things have been working great now, other than other
application specific compatibility issues which I expected, but so far so
good.

If it's a new computer bundled with Vista talk to the tech support for the
computer.

Liz, try the "nightly build" download for SVN. Actually as of right now, the
last stable release of tortoise has this problem resolved.

I have an AMD Athlon 3800 64x2 processpr and it will only let me install the
32 bit svn. Is this right?

That depends on which version of vista you installed, did you install the 32
bit or 64 bit?

I just bought my computer with Vista installed already. How can I tell which
version it has? It is a HP a1700n.

Also, I nevertheless tried the 32 bit nightly build for SVN and no luck.

This doesn't tell you if it is 32 or 64 bit....It just tells you which
version of Windows you are running. At least that is all I got from it! I
too am trying to find out if I'm in 32 or 64 bit as I need to know for
driver updates

Control Panel\System and Maintenance\System. There it will tell you whether
your OS is 32 bit or 64 bit.
