Internet Explorer 7: Links to files will no longer open with the default program

I'm using build 6000 of vista (64 bit) and version 7.6k.16386 of IE7 (32
bit) .

Recently, file type defaults for certain files - eg .mpg or .m3u will no
longer open and launch the correct programs.

Instead I get a box that politely says "The file you are downloading cannot
be opened by the default program. It is either corrupted or it has an
incorrect file type. As a security precaution, it is recommended that you
cancel the download" then links to some useless help topic.

Naturally, I've tried to restore the default file type settings in 'control
panel' - > 'default programs' but this doesn't seem to solve it.

Any ideas?

TIA

Re: Internet Explorer 7: Links to files will no longer open with the default program

Small update, I've managed to reset all file type permissions to the
defaults with the administrator protected 'Set program access and computer
defaults' option in the aforementioned control panel. This seems like using
a sledgehammer to crack a nut though :(
