I ordered the Vista Ultimate upgrade and plan to get the family pack.

Info: My primary system has 3 hard drives 2x74gb raptors in raid O and
1x400gb seagate.

I plan to reinstall windows xp pro onto the primary partion of the 400gb.
Then I plan to do a custom clean install of vista onto the Raid 0: raptors.

Vista just makes sure you have and activated non oem copy installed into
your system right.

Then I'll set my raid are 1st boot option. When I want to boot to xp I'll
just disable my raid drives and boot from the 400gb drive. I'm doing this
because not many programs/hardware I have are fully vista compatable(or run
perfectly on it yet, some are still beta drivers and not as fully functional
in vista yet).

My quetsion are:

1) Is this allowed?
2) When you use an upgarde vista dvd does it delete or make windows xp non
functional?
3)Are my assumptions correct in that Vista upgrade dvd will let you do a
custom install into another primary partion and another drive once it has
verifed your system has windows xp installed?

Family deal($50 each). 2 copies of xp home premium upgrade keys/LIS.

systems before upgrading to vista home premium. Iam afraid that if I install

I am basing this response on you're using the x86 version of Vista, not x64.

No, when using an upgrade edition of Vista (x86), the upgrade must be
started from the qualifying OS desktop, and Vista will be installed on the
same partition. In your case going from XP Pro to Vista Ultimate, the
upgrade can do either an in place upgrade where the image for Vista is laid
down (it's not a file by file copy as in XP, so the install is "clean", then
the programs and data are migrated to the Vista install), or a custom
install where the old installation is wrapped up into the windows.old
folder. You can salvage data from there or just delete all of it.

The license for the copy of XP used as the basis of the upgrade is subsumed
into the Vista license. It cannot be installed separately, even on the same
system in a dual boot. They become one. If Vista is removed then XP can be
installed again or used as the basis for a Vista upgrade.

The XP license is rolled into the Vista upgrade license, to keep the
XP license you would need the full version of Vista. The time limit on the
Family Pack is for the purchase, since the license doesn't expire you could
install it at anytime. Have a great day.

Very interesting responses, because I just installed Ultimate Upgrade onto a
new blank drive from XP on the other drive. I did custom and it asked me if I
wanted clean or upgrade. When I took clean it asked me where (which drive) I
wanted Vista on.

I now have a dual boot system. I get a peompt at boot up. Do I want XP or
Vista and they both work fine.
