I'm not trying to start an argument on which is better or blah blah blah, but
I was curious. When I buy a new version of OS X, it comes with 5 serial
numbers, that allows me to install it on 5 different systems legally.

My question is will Vista Full version at $399.99 do something similar or is
it only going to be one serial per box?

When you buy a new version of OSX, you have already plopped down a wad for
the hardware to place the O/S upon. They have already made a healthy (very
healthy - apparently) commission on the very expensive hardware you
purchased.

Microsoft only sells the software. Of course they will charge more.

They introduced a family discount plan. Purchase either an upgrade or full
version of Vista Ultimate, and you can buy up to two copies of Vista Home
Premium for $49.99 each.

There is volume licensing which I believe starts at a minimum of 5. I don't
know what the costs are.

a lesser grade.

MS just introduced a family plan but it works differently than Apple's.

I plan to use Apple's family plan ($179 for five licenses) for Leopard. We
have three Macs in our family.

Microsoft's plan is for three licenses for $350 to $500 and are tied to the
Vista Ultimate edition.

Given the different frequencies with which new versions of Windows and OS/X
are released this is not quite as big a difference as it first appears. I
did not have to pay for new XP releases (the service packs) and so my
initial cost in 2001 was all I have had to pay for the three versions of XP
(Gold, SP1, and SP2). On the other hand, I have been spending $129 every 15
to 18 months to keep current with OS/X (I have been buying single licenses
up to now). I have made three purchases of OS/X (I got my first version
preinstalled and have purchased the boxed copies of 10.2, 10.3, and 10.4).

The $390 I have spent on OS/X is actually more than what XP Pro has cost me.
I don't know how the math will work out now that MS also has a family plan,
but anything such plan has to be less expensive than buying three copies of
Windows separately. I sure hope there is a family plan price war in the
offing. Families can use the break!

As Rock says, the price break is on five, but requires signing up for volume
licensing. Microsoft does sell additional licenses but the difference in
price in slight ($20). If Windows costs you $200 then the second license
costs you $180. Since it is easy to find discounts greater than $20 most
folks just buy a new copy by shopping around rather than a second license
from MS.

No, where did you get that? Only if you buy three copies. One install per
license. The Family discount is buy one Ultimate - upgrade or full - and
get the right to buy up to two Home Premium copies for 49.99 each. Or buy a

No. You buy Ultimate and go online for one or two licenses for Vista Home
Premium.

The simplest scenario is for the two "other" computers to be running XP
Home. VHP will upgrade XP Home fine, but with XP Pro you will have to clean
install VHP. Doable but requires saving the files and settings, restoring
them after the installation, and reinstallation of the apps.
