The security software in Microsoft's Windows Vista is "ineffective" in blocking malware and slow to update against viruses, according to a security software vendor.

A test performed by Webroot Software found that Windows Defender, the security software included with Vista, failed to catch 84 per cent of spyware and malware. The test included 15 of the most common malware programs, said Webroot.

Webroot Software Inc??
I would prefer to see test results from independent security experts that
have no ties to commercial anti-spyware software

That's old news, and it's a flaw for sure. However, Windows Defender
isn't meant to be a replacement for an AV, or other security options.
It is part of a layered defense.

Joanna Rutkowska is brilliant, what she did isn't an easy thing
to do.

Oh, she's cute, too. ;-)

That is a 6 month old article based on tests on a beta version. Alot can
happen in 6 months of programming.

At the meoment, I'm runnig Vista Ultimate and OneCare
I 'm familiar with the topic.

Indeed, Joanna Rutkowska, Senior Security Researcher, COSEINC
has been involved in computer security
research for several years.

Now I don't like Defender myself, and I'm a very satisfied Webroot customer,
but how can you _possibly_ present the views of a company with a conflicting
interest as worth any attention?

It is not at all surprising to me that Webroot would say this as just today
they have released a Vista compatible update for SpySweeper (update ver
5.3.1.2344).

They do have to try to gain a toe hold in Vista - don't they?

Wojnarowski,

Seriously, when Webroot makes self-promoting statements as you shared, just

also keep in mind that the exploit demonstrated in vegas wasnt a remote
attack, a user needs to be logged in as administrator to install the root kit
in the Rutkowska example, somthing most users do not need to worry about...
