Question on Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor

I ran the Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor and it recommended Windows Vista
Basic, but when I clicked on the other tabs for Windows Ultimate, Home
Premium and Business...it also appeared that my machine was capable of
running them.

So what I was wondering is if the Upgrade Advisor is recommending Windows
Vista Basic based upon the fact that I have Windows XP standard edition?
(Thus if I had Windows Media Center edition, it would have recommended Home
Premium, etc.)

OR is the Upgrade Advisor really saying that only Basic will run well on my
system ?? (Even though the other tabs do give me the green light...including
Windows Aero capablity with my graphics card).

Re: Question on Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor

This program is not a be all and end all decision making tool for Installing
Vista. It is just advisory and can point out potential issues. You should read the
Upgrade Advisor FAQ, and check out the links on the page for additional information.

Be advised too, that the MS requirements for Vista are the bare minimum. Even
for their "Vista Premium Ready" PCs. That is, if you have these bare minimums,
Vista will run, but what they don't tell you is, it will be dog slow.

Also - read this article at PC Magazine about Vista requirements. And while you
are there, look around. They have a lot of info about Vista.

Re: Question on Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor

I believe what the UA is doing is recommending a version based up your
answers on the Feature Selection page, not necessarily due to any hardware
incompatibilities.

For example, if you had checked the box labeled "Watch and Record TV", it
would have recommended Home Premium. Checking "Connect to Corporate or
Campus Networks" would have recommended Vista Business. Checking both would
have recommended Ultimate.
