Disk noise

Please can anyone help. I am on Windows Vista and office 2003 and 2007 and
I cannot stop my computer hard disk from tinkling away, blue light flashing,
when I first put it on, its as if it has a mind of its own. I have stopped
it installing automatic updates, uninstalled a lot of the start up things in
msconfig and it is still active for about 5 or 10 minutes and is nearly
driving me mad. It makes booting up so slow and all the programs are bionic
to start. I wondered if its to do with Word making its thumnails (file
searching) does anyone know how to stop this, or any other suggestions that
it may be. We be so grateful for some suggestions please.

Margaret

Re: Disk noise

In Services (type it in Start's search box) disable Superfetch.

In addition to the suggestion to turn off Superfetch (it definitely
works... I've done it here), in Computer, right-click on your system
drive, choose Properties and make sure indexing is unticked.

Also... make sure that your anti-virus software isn't set to scan your
system when you start up.

Re: Disk noise

Another thing that reduces chatter is to set delayed start services to
normal start. All the chatter is done up front rather than over a few
minutes. But it is superfetch that does the 15 minutes of chatter.

Shut off the indexing service completely in services so it never
starts, don't just disable it for the drive.

How much memory do you have?

Did it WORK?

As for Superfetch, I've had it off for some time now, and have NOT
noticed any difference in speed of programs loading. And my system is
hardly "cutting-edge". In fact, I'd have to upgrade my mobo to get
Windows 7 to work with my SATA drives - Win7 doesn't like the drivers.

Re: Disk noise

I have typed in the Start Menu disable Superfetch, is that it, because it
just brings up items with that name in ? Is it supposed to bring up
something that I need to tick ? Sorry to appear thick.

Go into Control Panel. In the left column, switch to "Classic Mode"

Choose Administrative Tools, then Services.

You'll find it listed in there.
