Over the last 10 years every time I encountered a Power Calibration Error I
had a fried burner.

Now you know what I have told you about burning things Michael. The last
time you did that, you nearly burnt the house down!

This is quite possible, and at least with older versions of windows, points
to bad burner hardware.
It's not so cut and dried when you have to use third party burner software.

You would really be better off getting a new burner. And please don't get a
SCSI device. An IDE or SATA device might cost $30...
