| Are personal computers a "waste of time"? Well, we all probably waste time when playing with our computers. In my case, I alternate between two modes. 1) Staring at the sceen, thinking. 2) Using my famous one-finger typing. When I am typing, for some unknown reason my brain slips into neutral gear, and thinking is not possible. Therefore my time wasted typing should be eliminated, or at least greatly reduced. But there is something much more serious than merely wasting time, it has to do with flawed human memory, which I will address now, in a round-about fashion. When we are _away_ from our PCs... ....which is most of the time, often we may have had "great thoughts", any one of which could have used to make ourselves made bundles of money, and possibly employed lots of people. Shamefull, shamefull, shameful, I blame all of us for the present worldwide recession. If we only had the presence-of-mind to take our tiny Olympus DS-5000 digital recorder along with us, those great ideas would have enabled all of us to be rolling in clover right now. As it stands, every one of those great ideas died, a victim of our flawed memory. Look how easy it would have been for us to save the world from its current financial woes: 1) Slap our DS-5000 digital recorder into the PCs USB connection. Upon connecting it, the audio file gets _automatically_ changed to text. (three minutes at most, seriously, "Dragon NaturallySpeaking" will automatically convert the audio to a text file) Driver disk to help do this comes with the DS-5000. 2) By voice, clean up, edit, format the text file. Example of voice editing: "Select 'smelly guy in turban and big diaper' " "ResumeWith 'intelligent Indian intellectual' " Voice editing goes lightening fast, our total editing time on our world-changing document estimated at 6-minutes instead of the usual 36 minutes for a slow typist like me, at 10wpm. In the case of a fast typist (60wpm) there would not be any benefit either way, it would likely take 6-minutes to edit no matter which way the editing was done. 3) Plop the finished document onto the Internet by voice commands, takes a few seconds. Total time to field the plan to change the world from economic slump to a bustling economy, 10 minutes. All my fault for not pushing Dragon speech technology, as others here would have added their own Dragon-powered schemes to mine, creating a healthy bustling world economy. Now don't tell me that you have never thought of some logical scheme to do some great thing, only to have it flushed out of your brain by mundane stuff which needed your immediate attention. I know for certain that the guy who invented fire did not have a college education. Mark- |

BTW, my post is not OT when you consider that Microsoft Vista OS goes out of the way to include a half-vast speech recognition app as part of the Vista OS. Last time I checked, this _is_ a NG about Windows and Vista. Microsoft Vista does a pretty good job sucking in trivial users of speech recognition. They invariably become dissatisfied with the inaccuracy of Vista Speech, so a fair percentage of them go for a more robust speech app like Dragon NaturallySpeaking. Microsoft still wins, they get added sales of their OS from doctors and hospitals, who would not otherwise buy the OS if it could not be used for serious speech recognition chores. Heck, the doctors/hospitals might even buy Ubuntu <shudder> if it were not for the fact that that steaming POS can't run Dragon. Mark- |

How come you failed to mention that, Mr MS Shill? How come you haven't called the Nymshifter and Frank to the table for their violations of the rules of conduct? Alias Alias |

| Re: Are personal computers a "waste of time"? I am on a roll, as long as I am exercising my free speech, antagonizing all the pompous self-styed censors here in the process... ....I have decided to share my opinions about another 3rd-party app I like. I like "MacDrive 8" for my Vista computer. I work as a medical consultant, lately more Macs are appearing in hospitals and individual doctors offices, which presents a problem for me whenever I have to exchange files with those Mac-using doctors. "MacDrive 8" allows me to read/write to any Mac hard drive or CD/DVD drive. I can even access the files on a Mac "Time Machine" drive. http://www.mediafour.com/products/macdrive/ Mac friend of mine loaned me this 10-year old Mac "Lombard" model laptop to play with. My normal laptop, a custom ASUS, is out for some hardware upgrades. Mark- |

I never said very wealthy, I said compared to your poor ass. I will take over my fathers business and all the assets associated with that. Not sure what is hard to understand...just because you wish I worked at McD's doesn't make it so. The way you fascinate yourself with such things makes me KNOW you are poor. |
