| Req: Difference between OSLoader.xsl and bootmgr.xsl What is the difference between OSLoader.xsl and bootmgr.xsl? Which one do I edit to create my own bootscreen? is there a website that has a tutorial on these files and how to edit them? I would like to add colors and pictures to the menus, how is this done? John The only file you need to modify is winload.exe.mui or (better imho) reference a modified copy of it via your boot entry. But those files might be intermediary files along the route of whichever method you're using. -- Jon |

John I've modified osloader.xsl (within winload.exe.mui), but only simple changes like changing the boot text (eg the 'Starting Windows Vista' message or the text on the 'Advanced Boot menu'), nothing more sophisticated. I don't see why not though, since it's a notepad editable, xsl stylesheet format resource. If you know a bit of css / Html / xml, then it's layout is pretty similar. If you Google for "xsl stylesheet", you'll probably come up with some good tutorials. The usual way to have a graphical bootscreen, is to modify the bitmaps in the .wim resource of winload.exe, and add them to winload.exe.mui. But what you're doing sound like an interesting approach. Let us know how you get on. -- Jon |

How is this done? Where do I put the fonts I use? > Please help! John > I don't know to be honest. I've told you the limit of experimentation with it, which was changing some of the boot text. ie the the boot text in osloader.xsl. The 'Windows is loading ..' text is in bootmgr.xsl, a resource in bootmgr.exe.mui, as I'm sure you've worked out, so I'd presume you'd change that in a similar way (making sure to get the right bootmgr.exe.mui.file since there are multiple ones that I can see on my system. Probably this one, at a guess "C:\Boot\en-US\bootmgr.exe.mui" although there are others. But regarding colour changes or fonts really anything I'd say would be pure speculation on my part, since I've not tried it (perhaps one day if I have time I will). The thing to do would be to experiment and discover. Perhaps someone else will know more. -- Jon |
