| Computer Management - Disk Management... Vista Home Premium 64bit SP1.... When I try to get into Storage -> Disk Management, it just sits there. At the bottom it says "Connecting to Virtual Disk Service".. I see NO disks listed, not even C:... Ideas? |

| Re: Computer Management - Disk Management... Do you have any mapped drives being accessed across your network? If they are not available the service really drags and frequently reports errors.... There are several knowledgebase articles related to this. |

These memory stick slots do not show up in disk management. I have attached jpg of the device. Its mapped to J: I want to change it to something else. +-------------------------------------------------------------------+ |Filename: memory slots.JPG | |Download: /attachment.php?attachmentid=46 | +-------------------------------------------------------------------+ |

I imagine they are not USB devices? Also, I've had this PC for over a year and haven't had the need to actually use these slots. My video cameras are USB and I don't use the optional memory cards. Anyway this was related to a problem I was having with Norton Ghost and backing up my C: drive. I was using an external USB drive as my backup device. It was mapped to J:. The drive died on me (motherboard fried). I purchased a new external USB drive. The OS mapped it to K: and then assigned J: to the memory slot. I could not get Ghost working as it kept referencing the old J: backup device. I uninstalled and re-installed Ghost and now I'm using K: as the backup device. Still, I'm wondering how to change the memory slot mapping..... Thanks, Ray |

| Re: Computer Management - Disk Management... I was able to partially re-create your issue, but I do not use card readers. You will need to unmount the card reader to re-assign the drive letter to your portable drive. I successfully re-assigned a drive letter using a memory stick in a USB hub. When I un-mounted the hub I was able to re-assign its old drive letter. This procedure should work for your card reader, but you will have to re-initialize the card reader before you use it again -- probably with a re-boot, but maybe by just putting a card in it. I assume you can re-boot with the portable drive attached, if necessary. Otherwise the card reader might claim J again. 1. In the bottom-right side of your taskbar there should be an icon with the tag "Safely Remove Hardware." 2. Right-click on it and find the card reader with the letter (J). 3. Follow the steps to remove the hardware. 4. Use Disk Management to re-assign the letter to your portable drive. Good luck, and let me know if this works for your situation! |
