| turned it off the wrong way and now its broke The other night I was in a rush and I held down the power button until it shut off. the next day I tryed turning it on and after the MB homepage came up for 3 secs on the top left hand corner of the screen it said "Disk boot failure, please insert boot disk and press enter" so i fooled around with the priority settings a little bit and nothing worked. I then inserted the windows vista CD and it would say "Loading windows files" then the loading bar came up and it would always freeze at the same point and after about a minute a blue screen came up saying a problem occured and is shutting off the computer to prevent further damage. Iv tryed everything. could my hard drive be damaged or something? Please someone help me. I cant work with much because i cant even get into windows! :-( All i can work with is the Setup menu -- Chris9014 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Chris9014's Profile: http://forums.techarena.in/members/115493.htm View this thread: http://forums.techarena.in/vista-help/1215531.htm http://forums.techarena.in |

I think your drive is cooked (I might be wrong, & I hope I am); if so, try to connect the drive to another computer to save as much of your data as you can, then reinstall your system from scratch. You would have to remove it from the current computer to do what I suggest. You might be able to download a disk-test program that you could burn to a bootable CD, then boot from that CD and run the diagnostics. -- Gene E. Bloch letters0x40blochg0x2Ecom |

Unplug the box, open it and unplug the power from the HDD that is not booting. Re-plug the HDD, close the case, plug it back in and push the power button. HTH! |

Yes, I should have though of that - I have used one related product, EAESUS Disk Copy (which is free), myself. In the last two weeks, in fact :-) However, EASEUS won't copy individual files or folders, AFAIK, whereas I'm guessing that you are implying a setup that will do that. Thanks. -- Gene E. Bloch letters0x40blochg0x2Ecom I haven't tried it myself but some versions of Linux reportedly run on CD without having to get to the hard drive at all, so they might be able to see your drive and another drive and let you save files before you reformat and reinstall. Of course you wouldn't have anything to reinstall if you could just copy in your last backup instead of copying much if anything out. Regular backups can be time consuming but also a life saver if you get screwed like that. If you don't have one, get a drive you can backup your entire PC to. Ideally see if you can find a free program (or one you're willing to pay for) that can make a full backup of your drive as well as incremental backups. If you don't have a drive to backup to, try this: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4622464&sku=I21-6238 1 TB for under $100! I want one of these myself. |

Bloch letters0x40blochg0x2Ecom You mean the OP doesn't read responses to your posts, or that it sounds like I'm providing instructions for you on what the OP should be doing? I wanted to address your response which sounds like you expect Linux to run a setup from a CD to install on a hard drive rather than running from the CD, as well as to mention what the CD should be doing, where another drive would be required unless you do just want to wipe the drive (in which case you could use the Windows install CD instead) or you intend to save files from the hard drive to the CD. You could also take the advice on regular backups and check out an external hard drive if you don't have one already, but of course only the one with the problem here really has to do anything. |

I have no idea where you got the interpretation in your second paragraph. I did use the word "setup", but the context *should* have made it clear that I meant an arrangement present on the CD for the OP to use to save his files. As I said! From my older American Heritage Dictionary: Setup n. 1. The way in which something is constituted, arranged, or planned. (plus 6 other definitions). Note that my meaning is the first definition of the bunch... As for your third paragraph, where did you get the random assumption that I don't back up regularly? I never addressed my own behavior in that regard in this thread...and it is not true. Well, not quite true... -- Gene E. Bloch letters0x40blochg0x2Ecom |

| Re: turned it off the wrong way and now its broke I've done hard shut-down many times w/o consequences, and remember this is how we turned ALL things off before the advent of firmware-based (soft) power controls. Even though it's not recommended, usually there's no damage beyond a few complaining Windows messages (or Log files w/complaining lines!). Perhaps it was your bad luck that in your case it did damage system files.... P.S. Don't get upset but as a suggestion: "tryed" is properly spelled as "tried". It's odd that a foreign born like myself has to mention it to an American born, but I've seen worse in college - American kids are infected with anti-education bug? :) |

| Re: turned it off the wrong way and now its broke The posters here are correct. Sorry Microsoft but even I have to confirm this: a Linux CD e.g. my favorite flavor - SUSE by Novell Networks, can do wonders in terms of handling a damaged harddisk. Its bootmanager pulled off incredible situations in my past exceeding WinXP recovery abilities - bootmanager in SUSE was called "GRUB" and I made a dual-boot system. But as you get older you lose interest in hobbying around, as Linux did nothing for my business or profession, I went back to single-Windows configuration. So I haven't played w/Linux in several years, and Windows improved its boot-management functions anyway. Also I am not in the mood to bash yet another premier American co. (Microsoft) - w/o such America would slide really into economic hell, and drag Europe along with it. You have to understand that free ware amounts to Socialism and frankly I know how bad it is better than someone who knows it from BOOKS and FAIRY TALES - I've lived thru it for 20 years. When people aren't motivated by money (capitalism), they run on Enthusiasm or Fear for X-number of years and then start producing inferior rubbish. Come visit Russia and see how that Saudi Arabia w/Trees still can't get upto Western technology standards DESPITE BILLIONS in revenues from oil. Now imagine it had no oil or any resources like Japan? It'd be worse than Zimbabwe. Free software makes as much sense as taxrate of 100% - it removes motivation to work & produce quality product, it becomes a HOBBY. You can take a nap. Who cares, can you complain on Linux distributors like you can request customer support form Microsoft? No, because it's free, overall it's rubbish. It has strong points, but these are points - not a complete product. Frankly Linux smells like communism - a systrem where nobody cares for their products. Check out Cuban or Russian cars - only suicidals would drive them. |
