I am trying to view a slide show in an email under Vista. When I
click on view image slide show I get a message the photoviewer.dll can
not be found. The file is in the folder Windows Photo Gallery. Can
some one tell me what is wrong? Could the file be corrupted? How do
I get a clean copy if the file is damages?

The first thing to try is System File Checker from a Command Prompt:
sfc /scannow

What happens when you try that?

The next thing to try is Google or Bing. Bing gets over 19 million hits on
"photoviewer.dll". Google gets 60,400, so you might want to start there.

Hi, R.C. White,

I followed your instructions and ran sfc/scannow. At the completion
Windows resource corruption found corrupt files but was unable to fix
some of them.
Details are included in the CBS.log windir\logs\CBS\CBS.log. For
example C:Windows\LOg\CBS.log.

I opened the folder Windows\Log\CBS and found a file CBS.log created
today. The file is 32,548KB. I tried to open the file but the system
will not allow that to happen. What program will open the file so I
can see where my problems are located.

I tried the sfc /scannow once more without deleting the last file. the
size increase from 328 kb to 644 kb or an increase of 316 kb. Does
multiple runs clean up more problems?

Also, the problem with photoviewer.dll is still there. Is there any
way to get hold of a clean copy of photoviewer.dll?

Just reran sfc /scannow and there are two files in the folder
windows/logs/:
CBS file size 330Kb
FilterList size 1Kb

When I try to open CBS I get the following error message: Access
denied. If I try FilterList I get the following:
tmevtmgr 26 1
DefragFS 0 0
tmpreflt 26 0
luafv 1 0
FileInfo 26 0

Not sure what to make of the information above.

An additional question/problem. I downloaded the photoviewer.dll from
the Microsoft link you gave me. When I tried to copy it into the
Windows Photo Gallery folder the system would not allow me to replace
the bad file. I was able to add the file to the folder as
Photoviewer(2).dll. I tried to edit the permissions but the system
would not let that happen to the original file or the recent
version(2). How do I get rid of the original file and then rename the
new one to Photoviewer.dll and hopefully solve at least this problem?

Can an MVP please advise on how to handle the problem below regarding
the removal of Photoviewer.dll and replacing it with one just
downloaded from the Microsoft website.

I also need to know how to open for viewing the file in the
Windows/Logs/CBS named CBS.log. I have tried to change permissions as
I am an administrator but that does not help. When I try to open with
either notepad or wordpad I get access denied.

Please ask me to supply any additional data needed to solve my
problem.

Does this program allow you to view a slide show in an email? If so,
where do you get the program.

Google it! It's great.

As for viewing "in an email", it's highly recommended to save the file
to your hard drive and THEN view it.

Manny,

The email sender sent several photos that can be viewed as an image
slide show. That facility works under my wife's XP notebook but not
under Vista. That is the real problem I need to solve. Essentially
when I click on View image slide show I get the following error
message "Error loading ProgramFiles\Windows Photo
Gallery\Photoviewer.dll." The specified module could not be found. The
file Photoviewer.dll is in that folder. The only thing I can surmise
is that the file is corrupted. I have a new copy of that file but
Vista will not allow me to replace the old file with the new one as
Security will not let me make a deletion or renaming and then a
replacement.
