Anti Virus System Pro

My wife was on the internet and suddenly System Pro popped up and started
scanning warning my wife of a virus attack on her computer and wanted her to
buy the AV Pgm for $49.95. She just clicked all the exits and got off of
the internet and now she is locked out of her computer. We can't get system
restore to work, Can't get safe mode to work, She has AVG 8 installed but
cannot start it. Tried SFC /scannow but was denied access. Tried putting
the Windows XP disk in to do a repair and was unable to get it to start. I
think the only thing to do is reformat the HD and start over but her PC
ignores the A drive and the dvd drives. I cannot get into it in order to re
format it. We are at a loss. Any Ideas would be appreciated.

Re: Anti Virus System Pro

Your post is confusing. Firstly, if she's locked out of her computer, how
did you try to run SFC /scannow (to which you say your were denied access)?
How did you try system restore? This is a Vista news group yet you say
you're trying to do a system repair with an XP disk. What OS are you
running?
Did you try to boot from this XP CD? Is your BIOS set to boot from the
DVD/CD drive?
Reinstalling isn't a necessity. Malwarebtyes from
http://www.malwarebytes.org/ can remove this infection, but it's unclear
what you can and can't boot to or run. Perhaps you should get some
professional help with this. (and not from the local big store, but a
qualified technician).

would not. I set the bios to boot from dvd, it would not. It would boot to
C drive each time and the desk top looked normal. I got a message
(windows\system32\mskhfji.exe did not load also windows\system32\mskpuko.exe
would not load. I clicked on programs/accessories/system tools/system
restore and got a message(access denied) I will try
http://www.malwarebytes.org/ and see if I can get her up and running again.,

I tried to go to http://www.malwarebytes.org/ but could not connect. I got
a page stating IE warning visiting this site may harm your computer, then I
start getting spam advertising of all kinds. Now I guess its time to
punt...

Although this is a Vista group , what a/v program is on your wifes
computer ? Boot into safe mode and rename both files with the
extention .txt and see if they can be deleted .

The wife is using AVG 8 free. She is unable to get safe mode to start. No
matter what we try we get access denied. cannot start any pgms, IE keeps
starting up and going to spam sites one right after the other. I don't know
what kind of virus she has but it is a good one. I believe it came from
www.aware-protect.com A pop up keeps hounding her to buy antivirus system
pro for 49.95 to fix the problem. This virus has kidnapped her computer.

Re: Anti Virus System Pro

Download Malwarebytes to a USB Flash drive mounted on your Vista machine.
Insert it into the XP machine and install from the USB drive.

When I try to start malwarebytes I get the message "Windows cannot access
the specified device or program, path, or file. You may not have the
appropriate permissions to access them. I get this message on no matter
what I try to start including safe mode. Oh well. My wife got a new paper
weight I guess. Thanks Charles for your help.

Re: Anti Virus System Pro

Don't install software from the Internet unless is "known-good". Fake and
rogue "virus scanners" abound - don't install them and don't believe their
trick animated websites.

A couple of known good free anti-virus is Grisft's AVG, and Avast!

http://free.grisoft.com

http://www.avast.com

Before installing any software from the internet, investigate it first. That
will save you a lot of headaches. Install the software only through the
manufacturer's website or the channel the manufacturer has made available
from their website. Do not install from these share programs such as
Limewire or by torrent programs - they are virus ridden.

Getting a virus might not seem all that bad, especially if it doesn't seem
to do much. But behind the scenes it might be stealing and trading credit
card numbers, spying, storing trading and illegal pictures of people being
harmed, illegally hacking gov't computers, and / or many other wrongful
things. The effect of this stuff can be very ugly to real people. Don't aid
and abet by being careless.

Saucy

Re: Anti Virus System Pro

can even do so with Vista and the Windows 7 (but with those two you have to
follow a couple easy steps).
