Vista Ultimate to windows 7 Pro?

I am currently running Vista Ultimate 32 bit and I want to install Windows 7
when it comes out.
According to the upgrade advisor I have to purchase the same "Ultimate"
version in order to just do an upgrade.
It says that if I want to install a lower version, I will have to do a clean
install.
My question is, if I purchase the lower version (Win 7 Professional), do I
have to purchase the full version and not the upgrade version?
IOW, can I still do a clean install from the upgrade version?
If I recall there was a just this work around when Vista was first released.
Would this still hold true for Windows 7?
TIA

It would be difficult to say since the products have not formally been
released. I do know that if you install Windows 7 RC it installs Ultimate.

Whatever version of Vista you are running, you will need the comparable
Windows 7 version or higher in order to do an in place upgrade.

Just to add another question here for you Mike,
I'm currently running Vista Home Premium on a system which came with Vista
pre-installed...
Are the upgrade options still the same for this set-up?

thanks for your time,
dAVE

Re: Vista Ultimate to windows 7 Pro?

I doubt it very much since it sounds like you have an OEM version. You cannot use a
Retail Upgrade. You need to contact the OEM manufacturer of your computer for the
exact info.

Re: Vista Ultimate to windows 7 Pro?

I purchased a Dell Dimension E-521 with Vista Home Premium preinstalled by
Dell. I then bought a retail Vista Ultimate upgrade and installed it with no
problems. I don't recall if I did an in place upgrade or a clean install but
the license key was accepted by Microsoft as genuine.

Windows upgrades have always worked on OEM systems in the past. MS Help
and Support website has numerous articles describing how to workaround
problematic upgrades on OEM systems.

FWIW opinions at the MS Technet site below support the view that
upgrading OEM Windows to Windows 7 won't be any different.
