| Re: Time Sync Issue (w32tm debug help) Mark & Robinson, I'd like to comment on your thread if I may. First off, I'm pretty sure that my Vista Ultimate SP1 (Thinkpad T500) has the same issue that Mark is describing. Second, I have tried most (but not all) of the things that Robinson has described to no avail. In addition, I have a few variants to Mark's description I'd like to mention 1) My problem shows up in the UI *and* the service never syncs and also never puts anything in the event log. 2) I am able to do a /stripchart with time.nist.gov just fine so I don't think there are any network issues per se. 3) My system does not have SP2 but it was fully updated with WindowsUpdate on 6/4 and 6/11. I think there are some "pre-SP2" updates essential to an eventual SP2 install that went on in one of these updates. So, I don't think this is an issue specific to SP2 but rather in one of the recent updates just prior to SP2. I'd really like to get this fixed so if you'd like more information from me on system configuration/logs/etc. please let me know. | Re: Time Sync Issue (w32tm debug help) Robinson, I was just thinking about your comments to Mark and I want to clarify that my UI sync gives an error and does not change the system time. In addition, my w32time service does run but it never actually updates the time nor does it put any entries in the event log. Moreover, I have run a command like w32tm /stripchart /computer:time.nist.gov /samples:5 and by doing that I can confirm that the service itself can a) contact a remote ntp server and give back a time value and b) what the persistent time offset (my machine is currently about 35 seconds fast) between my system and that server is because the the system time is not being updated. Here's what the output looks like Tracking time.nist.gov [192.43.244.18:123]. Collecting 5 samples. The current time is 6/14/2009 7:13:53 PM. 19:13:53 d:+00.0899897s o:-35.0706906s [@ | ] 19:13:55 d:+00.0889824s o:-35.0722007s [@ | ] 19:13:57 d:+00.0899897s o:-35.0708540s [@ | ] 19:13:59 d:+00.0899897s o:-35.0717943s [@ | ] 19:14:01 d:+00.0879894s o:-35.0722139s [@ | ] What I'm driving at here is that Mark's problem and mine a very likely exactly the same and my conjecture is that the failure is a failure in the UI and w32time's ability to UPDATE the system time and not in their ability to get the time from the remote ntp server. I suspect that this issue is widespread but people don't realize that their time sync isn't working and nothing's going into the event log to tip them off. | Re: Time Sync Issue (w32tm debug help) Hi Mike, As the new report issue you mentioned is different from the one discussed in this current thread, we'd recommend that you start up a new thread for it. We generally focus on one topic in one thread because in this way it will be better for other community members to participate in the discussion, and to search/find specific answers more efficiently in the future. Thank you for your understanding. Best regards, Robinson Zhang Microsoft Online Support |

| Re: Time Sync Issue (w32tm debug help) Hi Mark, Sorry for my delay. I have discussed with my colleagues and we suspect incorrect registry key may cause the issue. Could you please take following steps to check it? NOTE: This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, Refer to the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:322756 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322756/) How to back up and restore the registry in Windows XP and Windows Vista. 1. Click Start , click Run, type regedit, and then click OK If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password, or click Continue. 2. Locate the following registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\Config 3. Right-click LargePhaseOffset, and then click Modify. 4. In the Value data box, type 02faf080, and then click OK. 5. Right-click SpikeWatchPeriod, and then click Modify. 6. In the Value data box, type 00000384, and then click OK. 7. Locate the following registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\TimeProviders\N tpClient 8. Right-click EventLogFlags, and then click Modify. 9. In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK. 10. Locate the following registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\TimeProviders\N tpServer 11. Right-click Enabled, and then click Modify. 12. In the Value data box, type 0, and then click OK. 13. Exit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer to test the issue. For more information, you can refer to the following link: Windows Time Service Tools and Settings http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc773263(WS.10).aspx If the issue sill persists, could you please help us collect your registry value? 1. | Re: Time Sync Issue (w32tm debug help) Hi Mark, Thank you upload registry file to skydrive. I have downloaded and check edit carefully and found the following abnormal key value. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\w32time\Config\"MaxNegP haseCorrection"=dword:0000d2f0 HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\Config\PhaseCor rectRate=dword:00000001 According to Technet->Network Configuration Technologies->Windows Time Service Tools and Settings (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc773263(WS.10).aspx), the value of MaxNegPhaseCorrection should be 54,000 and PhaseCorrectRate should be 7. Could you please modify it to test the issue? Does it work? Thank you for your cooperation. Best regards, Robinson Zhang Microsoft Online Support |
