PCI card for Aero

I'm having a bear of a time finding a compatible PCI card for aero. I've got
a half way decent system ready to go (dual core 3.0Ghz, 2GB RAM) but no
PCI-E. The only PCI card I can seem to find in the varied HCL's is the
nVidia FX5500, but several owners of nVidia cards are complaining about their
performance.

Re: PCI card for Aero

Nvidia has dropped support for Aero in the 5000 Series Video Cards with the
97.46 Drivers. You now need at least a 6000 Series video card to run Aero.
Try Comp-USA or Best Buy if you are in the USA.

Re: PCI card for Aero

The Vista supplied drivers run Aero on Nvidia 5200 series boards and up.
Just don't update the drivers.

I get Aero nicely on my cheapo ATI Radeon X550 PCI-E card

Re: PCI card for Aero

I've seen a few nVidia fx5200 PCI cards on the shelves. So, you're saying if
I install the 5200 and let Vista use it's own supplied drivers, I'll get
aero?

Dual Core and no PCI-E? Did you upgrade your processor at some point?

What you want is an AGP card and not a PCI card.

I forgot to mention that the Quadro FX is PCI-E, sorry for the

Re: PCI card for Aero

Let me clarify that a bit.

I initially used a 5200 AGP video card. Vista loaded the native drivers and
I was able to get Aero. I had a system rating of 2.4. Since then I have
upgraded to a 6600 AGP which gives me a rating of 3.7.

So, it may be a bit of a jump to state that a 5200 PCI board will allow Aero
to be functional.

Maybe others will add to this with further information.

RE: PCI card for Aero

I recommend the Visiontek ATI Radeon X1300 PCI graphics card. It's the one I
am using b/c I also don't have PCI E or AGP. You'll get 4.5 ish score for
Aero and 3.5 ish score for gaming graphics under the Windows Experience
Index. You can get this card from Tigerdirect.com or Newegg.com for about
$100, give or take. It's a pretty decent card, but I wouldn't recommend PCI
interface for serious gaming.
