Family Pack license in the works - Update

It looks like it has been finalized.

See here from CNET News:
http://news.com.com/Microsoft+tries+to+spread+Vista+far+and+wide/2100-1016_3-6150933.html?tag=nefd.top

Buy boxed Vista Ultimate edition and get 2 copies of Vista HOME Premium for
$50.00 per copy.

I think that is something that most everyone can accept!

So just buy that, then return all but one of the Homes for a total of $50.
Hmmm...

Somehow I doubt if you would get away with that. Hell, they are throwing you
a **** nice bone and you still want to cheat the company.

I really feel sorry for people with low moral turpitude such as you possess.

Quotes from the article:
"The program is being offered only in the U.S. and Canada and only from
Vista's January 30 mainstream launch through June 30."

Bad news for the rest of the world then :(

"Another option for getting Vista is to download it directly from
Microsoft's online software site, Windows Marketplace. In a first, Microsoft
is making the new releases of both Office and Windows available for download
at their standard list prices. (CNET Networks, the publisher of News.com, is
a partner in Windows Marketplace.)"

This could be interesting.

Re: Family Pack license in the works - Update

I agree. But, I'm sure that can't make retailers very happy-
which is why I thought they wouldn't be doing that. I had been
under the impression there was an "understanding" between
Microsoft and the major retailers about direct downloads.

Oh well, it is another option for the customer. That's a good thing.

Why were you so quick to post what you did? The thought you posted never
even crossed my mind. Now, why is that do you think? Maybe because I am
pleased with the discount and won't ever consider cheating a company that is
doing something nice for me?

Re: Family Pack license in the works - Update

Richard,

I have mixed feelings about this offer. Why not offer it as "buy Home
Premium at full price and get two additional copies for $50 each."? Why
force someone to buy Ultimate to get the offer? Maybe an extra $170 in the
MS coffer? Why not offer Ultimate at full price and two additional licenses
for $75 each? Bundling two different versions just seems a little odd to me.
But that's just my POV. I'm not saying it's a rip-off or a bad deal... just
smells a little funny to me...

Thanks for posting the link.

Lang

And thatsure won't be available outside the US either. Wouldn't want Euro
customers to get Vista at the US price would they!

Re: Family Pack license in the works - Update

So, pay RRP from Microsoft for no media (burn it yourself I guess after
waiting X hours to download) and a product key. Alternatively, walk
into a local store, possibly pay less than RRP, and have it immediately
with proper media and box.

I can't see there being too much of an issue for retailers, except they
may drop their price a little to be more competitive. For me,
installing Vista isn't a spur of the moment decision. So waiting 1 day
for delivery, or walking into a store, isn't an issue for me. It's not
like wanting a new music album and deciding to buy an MP3 online rather
than buying it in the shops - installing Vista is a big task compared to
listening to music.

Hardly. It saves you $180 on the RRP for retail versions of the three
products. But who pays RRP? More importantly, who buys retail? As a minimum,
most people will be opting for an upgrade, which means this family pack is
more expensive.

Many others will opt for OEM copies since they are unlikely to want to move
the OS from machine to machine, so this deal is even more expensive.

Apple are selling 5-licence packs of Mac OSx for $199... not that's a good
deal [if you like Macs].

Now, buying a retail copy of Home Premium and getting 2 additional licences
for $50, or buying ultimate and getting 2 additional Ultimates for $50
apiece would be a good deal.

But as it stands, it is only saving money for the few people stupid enough
to pay RRP.
