Re: Slow computer

A list of what I did to speed up my daughter-in-laws new Compaq laptop.

NOTE: Disconnect from the internet prior to doing the following:

1. Had on hand a copy of the latest version of Avast Antivirus FREE
edition

2. Uninstalled the Internet Utility Suite that came with the computer. I
also uninstalled every sub install of the same using Add/Remove Programs.

3. Installed Avast Antivirus FREE edition. When asked for a reboot at the
end of the install - say no. Then shutdown your computer.

4. Reconnect the internet connection

5. Restart the computer. The antivirus program will become resident and
immediately look for updates

6. Using "Uninstall A Program" remove any other manufacturer installed
program/utility that you either will never use or don't need.

By doing the above I was able to get her computer that was taking about 2
1/2 to 3 minutes to boot up down to approximately 1 1/2 minutes. The overall
experience was so much better.

Now, If you have been using the computer for a while before doing this there
is a possibility that your computer may already be infected by something
that slipped by the originally supplied internet protection suite. That is
another problem to be addressed if you still have problems.
