Backup Problems

I just bought a brand new 1TB external hard drive to backup my computer
with. Everytime I try to back it up, after fifteen seconds I get an
error msg saying:

"The backup copy did not complete successfully."
"A shadow copy could not be created for the following reasons
There is not enough space on the disk (0x80070070)"

I am only using about 200GB of my computers space and I am pretty sure
1TB is enough space.

When I start the backup, It says it is sending it to my J drive (which
is my external)

Can anyone please help me? I am getting frustrated and sad.

Re: Backup Problems

I would try using a different backup program and see if that gives you an
error. Also do you have anything on your 1TB drive?

Re: Backup Problems

You'll probably need to be a little more detailed about the TB drive.

Is it formatted? Are you dumping all the files into the root directory?
Which file system are you using FAT or NTFS?
Which Operating System? (should be Vista if you're in this group) Which
backup program? etc.

Any new information might help someone realize they have your answer.

Is the backup drive formatted? NTFS or FAT32? How many partition? What
size are the partitions? How are you doing the backup? Using what
software?

The fact that there is a backup utility included in the operating system
does not mean that the computer manufacturer has provided media to which you
can backup data.

The drive selected by the backup utility is, unfortunately, your recovery
partition which is sized to contain only the recovery files and enough free
space such that Windows will not flash up 'low disk space' warnings.

This is not the fault of Vista or the backup utility. Backup utilities are
designed to look for a partition or drive which does NOT contain the
operating system because there is absolutely no point in backing up to an
active boot partition.

What you must do is rescue whatever backups have been created on the D
drive, and move them to a CD/DVD or an external drive. This could be a flash
drive but I would not recommend this.

When you have done this, the low disk space warning will disappear.

For the future, either use your CD burning software to make backups or buy
an external device of a decent size, and continue using what you do now, but
ensure that it points to the new external drive..

No there isn't anything on the 1TB, It's brand new. I did check, and it
was 100% free. :(

Forgetting what I posted, have you partitioned and formatted the 1TB drive
yet?

do you have an setup instruction sheet for the external drive?

Mike, at some point when you're answering posts, you might want to read the
previous posts. Just a thought.

It was an answer I had saved from another post. As soon as I realized what I
had done, I did actually reply again to the OP.. :-)
