Gifs

Hi, does anyone know if it's possible to get Vista to preview an animated
gif. It will show it but not animate it. The only way I've found to see the
animation is to drop it on to I.E.

Thanks in advance

Download Irfanview. Yeah... it's annoying.

Re: Gifs

It was always available to see in IE in every OS since Windows 95. What do you mean
by "get Vista to preview an animated gif "

Re: Gifs

Every incarnation of windows has had some form of picture viewer built in as
standard and everyone was able to display a gif and animate it, that's
everyone except Vista.

And yes you've always been able to view them with I.E, but what a pain up
the butt when you want go through a folder full :-(

Thanks for your replies, I guess I need a 3rd party programme as suggested.

The programs that MS gives away with the OS are just starter programs.
If you have a need for a capable and complete program in *any* area
there are *always* better tools. This has been true of OS's since long
before MS Windows.

A very valid ethos, although IMO thats not really Microsofts direction
is it?

If it was would they find themselves infront of the EU anti-trust panel
in regards to IE? or what about Media player?

What you are talking about was true in the days of proprietary OS's such
as the Amiga. IMO it certainly has not been true about Microsofts
offering for some time.

I think Microsoft trying to be "jack of all trades" is the problem.

Just an observation, but ask yourself this, is Windows truly a platform
for the user to seek their own software solutions or is it a platform
for Microsoft to sell you more of their own products and the "better
tools" are, according to Microsoft, their own.

I agree with your "jack of all trades" comment. Yes, they want to sell
you everything. They have specific strategies to suck corporate
customers into their proprietary hold. They do the same with home
customers, although today's market fights back somewhat.

Yes, they'd like you to upgrade to their solutions - witness the
number of machines that come with Office for free for a limited time.

That all said, they still give away tidbit programs, like every other
OS of the last few decades. And, the tidbits still suck on a relative
basis, like every other OS.

NORMALLY, the built-in viewer would show animated GIFs, but not so in
Vista. That is not the case in Vista.

I have to use Irfanview for my default viewer.

Worse: Outlook 2007 doesn't show animation either, now.

Re: Gifs

I agree with Eddy - needing to drop each animated graphic into IE is a pain
where a pill won't reach. I have tons of animated graphics and not being
able to use Windows Picture and Fax Viewer to surf through them is a great
inconvenience for me. But, alas, Vista was engineered not to support
animation. Sometimes I think the developers of these new and "improved"
systems have their heads in a position other than on their neck. Don't hold
your breath, but the latest word I've heard is Windows 7 is supposed to be
out in time for the holidays - of course no one mentioned which holidays -
2009 or 2025. Maybe those at Microsoft will be smart enough to reintroduce
the ability to view animations with the Picture and Fax Viewer before we all
change to MACs

Re: Gifs

MSFT has deemed .wmf and animated .gif files to be archaic and/or dangerous,
so Windows Explorer won't show them (even in Windows 7).

You can view them with IrfanView...
