Up until a few days ago windows update set on automatic works just fine.
However, two days ago when I clicked on windows update from the control panel
all I get is an empty pane with the little circle going round and round
endlessly. I then go to ctl/alt/del and hit end program for windows update
and see message that windows explorer not responding and windows looking for
solution then another message that windows explorer is restarting. I can't
get updates and I can't get in to uninstall anything as I believe to do that
I have to go thru the windows update screen.

Try the following:-

Open the Vista Start Menu search Bar and type: RUN

Click OK

Type the following lines and after each one click OK:-

regsvr32 jscript

regsvr32 vbscript

regsvr32 /i mshtml
