Also, did you try system restore. You may have a decent backup to restore.
Vista create a restore point for you automatically when you install any new
software. If the bootrec /rebuildbcd command did find something, you may try
BCDEdit to see whether you can add something there. You can see the detailed
parameters by using BCDEdit /? under recovery console command line
interface.

If startup repair does not detect any Vista installation, then there's
something seriously wrong.

It's hidden. It does not need to exist in order for startup repair to
detect Vista.
