I know you won't like to hear this, but you could be having hardware issues.
If you can't afford to take the machine to a professional (and don't use a
BigComputerStore/GeekSquad type of place), then you are simply going to
have to get hold of a friend with a DVD burner. You need to burn the Vista
recovery disk and try a System Restore to when things worked. Is this where
you got the recovery disk .iso?

http://neosmart.net/blog/2008/windows-vista-recovery-disc-download/

Trying the System Restore from the Vista recovery disk you will make
(remember to burn as an image and not as data) will help narrow down the
troubleshooting. If you can't do a System Restore, it's time to test the
hard drive.

I understand and am sympathetic about money being tight, but wishing isn't
going to change anything. If your hard drive has died, it has died and
that's all she wrote. You need to find out what's wrong and get it fixed.
Go to a friend's house and do your assignments on his/her computer to take
the pressure off you. Then you can troubleshoot your computer with a little
more breathing space.

1) She doesn't have the resources to take her boxes anywhere. That was
clear. It's impossible to completely rule out a hardware problem, but the
fact is differential diagnosis wise, hardware problems or hard drive failure
is less likely. Odds are from what I've seen at Fry's and Best Buy's most
of them can't do half of what can be offered as help here. They don't have a
clue.
2) All she needs is a CD to make the Recovery Disk, Malke.
3) While hardware might be a factor and that would as you know include a
panoply of items as possibilties, and the hard drive on any body's box could
die, just as people can die suddenly, the odds are her problem is software
induced. She has nothing to lose by simply getting her hands on a CD and
burning the startup repair files on the Neosmart .iso link to it and then
trying

1) Startup Repair
2)Boot rec commands
3) System restore

from the disk

and then the F8 menu and she has the directions to do that.

Best,

CH

Also Malke--

Borrowing a DVD writer, and some media that will hold 120MB of files, and
doing the Startup Repair menu options and the F8 options would take all of
one hour.

While it's been more than a year ago for me, I remember final exams in
different schools, (and I'm sure you do) Board exams, etc. and when you have
exams coming up on the weekend following a Wednesday which would mean they
start Friday, you're feeling some pressure to get hold of whatever notes,
etc. you need on your computer where you can do your thing in private. Many
people don't have the notes, docs, whatever they need to take finals on on
another computer. Some finals include take home essays. Who knows?

The Neosmart files that you download in the .iso from its links are only
120MB so she only needs to burn a CD. She should be able to borrow a DVD or
even a CD burner from whomever she can get the media from, if what she says
means she doesn't have a burner of any type. It's not precisely clear
whether she can burn a CD on that old notebook or not.

"because the old laptop I'm on right now only has a CD-R (??????)[CD Reader
maybe] and a DVD-Rom."

She may mean the laptop has the ability to burn a CD but among neighbors, a
DVD writer shouldn't be hard to find where she gets some media.

Best I can recollect, Dell for example was routinely putting CD burners in
boxes in the year 2000, and maybe OEMs were doing it earlier than that. DVD
burners came a little bit later.

Informal History of CD/DVD Burning
http://www.hubersn-software.com/history.html

And as in many cases, if the OP doesn't check back, or borrow a burner, we
can't do that for her.

Re: Panicking! Crashed, cannot reboot in any mode!! HELP!!

Thanks. I thought your ideas on the thread for SimCity over @ setup were
very resourceful., and expanded his options to fix.

LOL I'm glad he got Vista booted with nothing lost, but I'm still wondering
precisely what it was that finally worked. I remember back in the day of XP
in bloom, that a couple of times I had to repeat an inplace upgrade aka
repair install of XP with the CD in order to get it to work, but most of the
time for XP that was my fix of choice. I don't remember if anyone had
downloads for files to fix it, but of course there were all kinds of boot
disks, some probably more successful than others.

If you find out, and I miss it, please let me know.

When OPs post, and you try to help them, and they start putting their
"progress" somewhere else, it's interesting, but it makes it hard to
continue to help 'em.

What I don't understand is why she didn't just call the next door neighbor
and borrow a burner and a CD and make a repair disk because I don't know
what she had on that system that was important to her, but she intimated
that she had stuff she needed for her finals (notes /docs, whatever I dunno)
and it would be a shame if she lost it because she couldn't go next door and
borrow a burner and a CD/or a DVD. The startup repair files from the
Neosoft download are only 120 MB as you know.

I'll try to look at that and figure out how she ended up. If you were
there, I'm sure you gave her some good options, but still, had it been me,
I'd have gone next door. We have IT people with a lot of resources in my
neighborhood, but even the ones who aren't have a burner and some media.

Thanks,

CH

SIW2--

Great screenshots over at Vista forums--how do you do those? I may have a
couple drinks before I read her LOL " OMG" posts on that thread. I mean
she seems to have snatched defeat out of the jaws of victory, and right now
I haven't read what the hell she was doing with Office. I'm sure I'll have
a couple drinks before I read the rest of that.

SIW2--

1) Why if Vista forums are mirrored here did all of Sunni's subsequent posts
never show here? Did she suddenly elect for them not to show here?
2) I tried to post to help her on Vista forums directly, but once you post
either the mod holds them for a time too long to see your post and any
response to it, or they vanish. I don't know which one.

(snip very long answer)

Look, Chad - I told her to go to a friend's house and burn the recovery CD
(or DVD - it doesn't matter) because she doesn't think she can burn
ANYTHING on the old laptop.

She can also burn a hard drive diagnostic CD on the friend's computer.

There is no way that she can troubleshoot this without burning *some* sort
of CD .

She needs to:

1) Burn the recovery CD and try System Restore. If System Restore won't work
OR the recovery CD won't even run, then she probably has hardware failure.

2) In that case, she needs to run a diagnostic on the hard drive. For which
she will need to have a burned CD.

I *also* suggested she do her assignments on a friend's computer to take the
pressure off. If her assignments are able to be done elsewhere, then she
can put off dealing with the broken computer until she is calmer and has
the time to address the issues in a non-panic mode.

I don't see where that answer required two long (and they were TL; DR)
replies from you to me.

Malke--

In that case, she needs to run a diagnostic on the hard drive. For which she
will need to have a burned CD.

Your suggesting that she concentrate on her school work and focus on her
finals if she can borrow a box or the use of one is a very sensible one
obviously.

I'm still puzzled as to why you can't go down the street or next door and
get a couple or a few CDs/DVDs and borrow your neighbor's burner or get a
workable one from a Fry's type store quickly at low cost. I've seen
internal HDs at Fry's for about $25 with tax, and if you can go up a little
you can buy a good Sony or whatever and install it quickly but the latter
may not fit her situation on her older HP laptop and she may not have a
spare desktop

***Her hard drive works. It's not the problem, and it hasn't failed, and I
don't know what specifically led you to think it was high on the list as a
diagnosis, and I mean this in the friendliest most respectful way*** I
value your considerable contributions and your obvious experience at working
with these issues on a daily basis as a profession.

I'm not in the least dissing your considerable abilities or any of your
ideas.

She's using it now with a recovered Vista (which was to factory settings so
it appears she's lost what was on that HD, and has downloaded an Office
trial onto it.

While most of us would agree that HDs and hardware, can fail at any time,
it's hard for me to understand why someone with as much experience and
obvious talent as you have seems to always go for HD failure as your #1
diagnostic possibility when

a) odds wise it's not close to the top differential diagnosis for most of
these Vista Won't Boot situations and software is far more likely
statistically to be the problem
b) there often doesn't seem to be anything that is pinpoint diagnostic with
a lot of these OPs that would lead you to be able to nail HD failure or any
symptom that would give you an "AHA" moment.
c) Many of these BSOD stops, no matter how and where you parse and interpret
them--books (I have a few Troubleshooting MSFT Technologies by Chris Wolf
Addison Wesley is one, MSDN's sites, technet) are vague, and non-specific
and some of them can indicate the possibility of either hdw or software
driver or other root causes, and once in a while both can come into play.

AYK, most of these OEM manufacturers have a keyboard combo at startup like
Dell's control +alt +D that will give you some level of sensitivity and
specificity (and accuracy) but it and they are not perfect.

I have a Dell where ctrl+alt+d gave me a message that said the HD had
failed, and I confirmed the messages' components with the team that builds
future boxes that will come to market at Roundrock, and I was able to get
that HD to work perfectly for a year until it finally was gone. Needless to
say, a year is plenty of time to back up prolifically.

I followed the thread where for some quirky reason Sunni a) started a new
thread under a different heading b) intentionally stopped mirroring her
posts on Vista forums onto this group (preventing some of the people who
tried hard to help her from even knowing what she was trying or doing.

From what I can see of her posts, she didn't turn out to have HD failure
(but I'm not suggesting any of us has any long distance telepathy). I'll
try to link you to that thread so you can see for yourself. From SIW2 who
moderates and contributes a lot over at Vista Forums, she got into trouble
somehow from seemed to have been able to use a recovery partition to get
Vista back with factory settings (he thought that malware had somehow caused
her no boot problem, but I'm not sure how it did that) and that from SIW2

"Looks like it was the the malware getting aggressive after she
restarted the pc.

She has managed to do a system recovery , but there wasn't enough space
to save the existing contents of the partition.

I have suggested some free apps. that I found could recover deleted
files - even after a format.

If you want to follow it, here's the link:

http://www.vistax64.com/general-discussion/225938-omg-can-someone-please-help-me-6.html#post1037928

I posted on there that my experience with undelete type apps paid and free
is that they don't work all that well for recovering a whole OS boot--they
can erratically sometimes recover some files and folders, but maybe I didn't
find good enough apps. I remember using Symantec's "undelete" and being
completely underwhelmed and unsatisfied with the abilities it touted but
didn't deliver in my hands.

Maybe SIW2 who has had some resourceful ideas about recovering on some
recent posts here, found better apps at recovering things formatted. I know
that if you have the right forensic tools you can recover from most types of
format, but few people have them. I know IT types swear by only one format
if you really want to make things go away for good, whose name you probably
know or initials/acronym that has a "P" in it escapes me for the moment. It
was mentioned at a MSFT meeting they put on I went to a couple weeks ago.

She tried I think to get an .iso for Office that was probably a torrent, and
seemed to abandon it because she had no way to burn it. Then she downloaded
the 60 day trial from http://office.microsoft.com I suppose because she had
the finals coming this weekend and maybe needed it for her school work.
That's where she seems to be now.

She says she'll focus on getting her assignments/final done, and then try
some of SIW2's "recover material after you've formatted" tools when she
finishes her final exams.

I would be amazed if she recovers what she's formatted with the OEM
recovery mechanism, but there is plenty for me to learn every day.

Again if she's used the recovery partition on her box, I don't see how
she's going to recover what's been erased by the format it would have done,
but time will tell. SIW2 says some of those free tools work pretty well,
and that's interesting. Great if they do, and it broadens my perspective on
them. If they do, more people need to be aware of them so they can use
them. There sure is the need for recovering material after it's been
formatted, it's just that my perception is that doing so requires expensive
forensic type tools or hard drive recovery pro tools, and a certain amount
of experience not readily available to an end user via free "undelete type
downloads."
