Minimize. Won't Respond. Help?

Hi, I'm Aesop.

I'm having a problem with my Vista 32 Home Premium Laptop. The Model is
a Dell Studio 15. When I'm in a program, like a game (ex: Left 4 Dead,
Combat Arms) when ever I minimize it, or change the volume, its still on
the bar at the bottom, but I never can open it back up. It always says
not responding when I try to close it. Any help for changing my
settings?

Thanks very much.

If this happens only with game programs - not programs like Internet
Explorer or such - then the best answer would be "Don't do that!" Not many
games handle being minimized/maximized/suspended well and will often freeze
up.

Re: Minimize. Won't Respond. Help?

Hi there,

There are bunch of reasons which may cause this issue. If your programs were
running OK but slowing down gradually. When you cannot switch your notepad
to the background and reopen it well, I would recommend you to clean up your
registry and scan for malware or spyware on your computer. You will get
quite a few links for that by googling. Sometimes antivirus software or some
third party software will freeze your computer while they are doing kind of
synchronization to the server of their manufacture's web site. You can check
the settings of them and change those synchronization to be done manually.
Here I got two links for you to check your registry and scan for malware.

If all those games were never responding after switching from background,
then there might be a memory problem. To improve that, you can make sure all
the updates are installed first. Then you can use Msconfig to disable
unnecessary services and program launched during startup. Then, you can try
to change shared graphic memory settings in BIOS, such as AGP Aperature
Size. You can also try to disable Appearance features like transparency or
themes. In Control Panel, you can adjust the Visual Effects which is under
System and Maintenance->Performance Information and Tools. Click on the
Adjust visual effects link on the left pane and use the settings for best
performance on the Visual Effects tab. On the Advance tab, you can change
the virtual memory. Placing the paging file on a nonsystem volume may help.
A larger paging file my allow more applications to be running at the same
time but it may slow down your machine while reading content from there to
resume your games. You can try different settings there and see the results
for different possible course of the issue. You can also lower the
resolution of the screen to save some memory. If the game can be run full
screen or in a window, run it in a window. If you can see setting on the
game says hardware accelerate vs software accelerate, use the hardward if
possible. That may save you some transaction on CPU and memory. Make sure
the applications are compatible with Vista. The last resort might be to
decrease the quality of the texture or frame delivery of your games.

If you are not installing Vista SP1, the following patch can help reduce the
shared graphic memory specifically.

Hope that will help.
