Some time ago I began having a problem trying to open or view some
attachments within Windows Mail. Usually it is attachments with a pps
suffix,but not always. For example if I have an attachment named
"CreativeShotsAZ.pps" and click on it Open Office will open and then I will
get the error message "C:\Sysyem32\CreativeShotsAZ does not exist"

If I try to copy the attachment to the desktop I get the message "Could not
find this item. This is no longer located in CreativeShotsAZ,pps.Verify the
item's location and try again.

I thought maybe that the pps format could not be read by Open Office so I
downloaded a pps reader from Microsoft but since the system cannot find the
file I can't use the reader.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks for the response. I don't think the fix for pps reader is the
problem. The system simply does not find the file; it really does not get
to the pps reader. It tries to open with Open Office ,which is my default
for this file suffix but cannot find the file and I cannot copy the file as
it says the file does not exist.

In addition, I sometimes get the same result when trying to open a jpg file.

Your file associations might have errors. Have your tried saving the
attached file (point to a known directory!) and opening the result from
inside your Power Point reader? (I.e., File | Open.) If that works, my
guess is probably correct.

As I mentioned I cannot copy the file. When I try to do so I get the
message that the file cannot be found. Today I received an email with the
doc suffix that has the same problem. Cannot open it nor can I copy it.

I originally thought that it might be due to 2007 MS Office formats but I
believe that doc is a format prior to that.

Frustrating.

Do the e-mails actually have an attachment when you get them
or maybe the attachments are being stripped off enroute.

If the attachment isn't being stripped before your email can download it,
are you able to right click the paperclip and see what the attachment file
actually is and then simply search for it above the start button? What kind
of attachment is it?

OK, I said *save*, not copy, i.e., click on the attachment and save it,
then look for it where you *saved* it. I realize we might be using
different words for the same or similar things, but just in case not, I
wanted to emphasize what I meant.

I don't think that different formats would give the symptoms you have, but

It's all in the details, huh? Yes, I was trying to "Copy" and the copy
could not find the file. I did a "save", right clicked on it, selected open
with MS Power Point viewer as there it is. I have no idea why I can't open
it from within Mail, but at least I have a work around.

Got a work around from Gene E. Block. The file is there. No idea why I
can't open it or copy it but at least I can now find a way to view it.

It is always BEST to save any attachment to your drive and THEN open
it. Sometimes your setup won't let you open attachments because they
have been deemed "unsafe" by your email client.

I agree and I do it that way myself. But, for Melvin, I'd like to add
(repeat) that within the mail program are settings for how to open an
attachment. That is, the mail program's file associations are in addition
to and independent of those of the OS. (I think. I use Firefox; it might
not be the same for Mail). [Also: although I said "repeat" above, I see
that my first post was not clear on the issue of associations.]

So if you still want to open the attachment directly, go into Mail and set
up the correct associations for pps files.
