You think that logic is good? Wait until the real damage happens and you
won't be laughing then. If you open a KNOWN e-mail attachment from someone
you know, it could be infected. End of story.

Unless, of course, you open it with Ubuntu.

But then your other programs won't work so Ubuntu is completely WORTHLESS.

Re: Antivirus software for Windows Vista

My ISP uses virus detection. If like you say 'real damage' occurs I merely
restore from my backup.
Even that has never been needed.
"It could be infected"?????? Should I succumb to fear? I could have a
lightning strike which
completely destroys my computer.

Monkey,
How does that happen then? Clicking on "a KNOWN e-mail
attachment...etc" can end up being infected?
Viruses are sent by people who have malicious intent. If I sent someone a
'clean' attachment, it could not then arrive 'infected', could it?

Remember the "I Love You" virus that hit years ago. If you used Microsoft
Outlook, it would go through your address book and send infected emails to
every address. If it was your computer and you had Outlook, you would have
technically sent infected emails. You have no malicious intent but the
recipients would get infected once they opened the message.

Re: Antivirus software for Windows Vista

That's handy to know, as I have never heard of that particular virus before.
I will view, with a little suspicion, email attachments from even people I
know, from now on. Although, I must say it's got to be a very rare
occurrence, hasn't it? However, you HAVE warned me of a potential threat
that I had not previously been aware of, and I thank you for that 'measekite

Re: Antivirus software for Windows Vista

LOL! You can't make it up, can you?

I still remember the day when that one hit. Being the manager of the QA
department, I made it a habit to get in before the rest of the department
every morning. One of the people working for me had also came in early that
morning. There were no more than five people in the building at that time.
I got a few things done and then checked my email. I saw the suspicious
message and it came from a client who had no control over their network, we
had received some other infected messages from them in the past. The person
who worked for me that was in worked on the project for that client. I
immediately called her and told her not to open the message but at that
moment she opened it and then it began top spread. I placed a call to the
IT manager who was on his way in and we shut down all systems until
everything was checked. But many of our clients got the message since they
were in our Outlook address book. Fortunately, we managed with little
damage and so did our clients.

Re: Antivirus software for Windows Vista

That was a pretty nasty virus Tim. IIRC, there was a fimr in the UK that
had thousands and thousands of photos on their server destroyed - this virus
attacked JPEG files. They were either a stock photo company or archived
photos from client, I don't recall. But they also did not have adequate
backup from what I heard and lost a lot of those photos forever.
