Some people / machines seem okay with it, I certainly wasn't and if I'd left it on this machine I'm using at work right now you'd probably get this next week :) Sorry, I think they have tried to do too much with it and it shows. By all means try it, the protection is good, but it's probably not going to be the fastest or least noticeable. |

The best is NOD32 (which you have to pay for) 2. If you want a free one, get Avast. It's not quite as good as NOD32, but still very good. -- Ken Blake, Microsoft MVP - Windows Desktop Experience Please Reply to the Newsgroup |

| Re: Antivirus software for Windows Vista I remember not long ago Avira was being recommended as a very good antivirus program - I don't know whether that is still the case, and I am very happy with ESET Smart Security. But if I were to be wanting a free AV I would try Avira from: http://www.avira.com/ where there is a link, at the top of their list, to the free version at: http://www.free-av.com/ Doug "Jane A Taber" <jane@taber.com> wrote in message news:%23L2CphPxJHA.496@TK2MSFTNGP06.phx.gbl... > Can someone suggest a good antivirus program for Windows Vista? > > It is VERY important that the antivirus program does not consume a lot of > system resources and slow down the computer like Norton- or Norman > Antivirus does. > > I also did read the post below but did'nt get any clear suggestion here: > http://www.hd720i.com/free-edition-anti-virus-programs-156719.aspx > > __________ Information from ESET Smart Security, version of virus > signature database 4034 (20090424) __________ > > The message was checked by ESET Smart Security. > > http://www.eset.com __________ Information from ESET Smart Security, version of virus signature database 4034 (20090424) __________ The message was checked by ESET Smart Security. I hear they will withdraw support for the free Avast at the end of the year. What is the best alternative? <H>. I liked it so much, I decided to pop for the registered version. The newest version also has real-time malware protection. http://www.softpedia.com/get/Antivirus/AntiVir-Personal-Edition.shtml There IS a "nag screen" in the free version (trying to "nag" you into upgrading) but it can be disabled - along with the startup screen. | Re: Antivirus software for Windows Vista I parrot Ken's answer. I use Avast Free version with Vista 32 bit Home Premium (as does my wife on her XP machine) and we have had no trouble. As well Avast does score very high on AV tests year after year. I also in the past purchased Nod 32 and it ran well also. I switched to Avast after my Nod 32 license expired. I have heard that Microsoft will offer a free AV sometime in 2009. I expect if and when Avast Free is no longer supported I will switch to the upcoming MS AV product. FYI the new Norton 2009 security products (which I have also run) are very good on resource usage , detection etc. They are of course not free except for the trial versions.
