From your description of the problem it sounds like hardware failure. You
can troubleshoot this yourself, starting with the hard drive, or take the
machine to a competent local computer tech. If you go the latter route, I
don't recommend using a BigComputerStore/GeekSquad type of place.

Have had very similar problems with XP and Vista due to bad capacitors
on NVidia cards, I agree the first thing I would suspect is hardware.

In my case the capacitor tops were visibly split open :)
