Vista Ulitmate SP1
My CDROM drive goes missing.
If I use device manager to "scan for hardware changes"
it comes back.
But later, it's missing again.
I've googled and found a lot of people with the same
problem.
I don't have any registry entries for upper/lower filters
to delete.

Suggestions?

Do you mean you do not have: ?
Click Start

Click Accessories, and then click Run.
Type regedit, and then click OK.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation,
type the password, or click Allow.
In the navigation pane, locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
In the right pane, click UpperFilters.

Note You may also see an UpperFilters.bak registry entry. You do not have to
remove that entry. Click UpperFilters only. If you do not see the
UpperFilters registry entry, you still might have to remove the LowerFilters
registry entry. To do this, go to step 8.
On the Edit menu, click Delete.
When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
In the right pane, click LowerFilters.

Note If you do not see the LowerFilters registry entry, unfortunately this
content cannot help you any further. Go to the "Next Steps" section for
information about how you can find more solutions or more help on the
Microsoft Web site.
On the Edit menu, click Delete.
When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
Exit Registry Editor.
Restart the computer.

Well, I tried very hard in my initial
post to clearly explain that I don't have any upper or lower filters
to delete.
I'm looking for NEW ideas.

Hey, I don't know if this can help you but, when I got my laptop new it had
2 eisa partitions which I removed and then just had my drive setup as C: and
D:, ntfs drives( Not original factory hd setup) I did a reinstall of Vista
and had no CD/DVD even in my Device Manager, I tried removing filters and
everything, nothing worked, end result take it back to where I got it, they
reset the hard drive to original with the 2 eisa partitions in there and my
CD/DVD was back no problem. So my only idea is if you have maybe done
something like that, it may be of a concern.

BTW, I was using the recovery discs from laptop manufacturer, so I dunno if
that had anything to do with my issue or not.
