Vista Compatibility

Hi All, I downloaded from my msdn subscription vista 64 and vista x86.
I try several times to setup on my machine, either from boot and updating
win xp and even with 64 version. The installion program crash with a blue
protection error screen, but there no info about the cause, just the general
error message.
Here my hardware configuration, I'm surprise if there is any incoptibility
issue cause it's all pretty recent, and I renew the video card with a vista
ready one.
Anibody knows if there is some issue about?
Thanks
Jonathan

Re: Vista Compatibility

At what point in setup does it crash? What hard drive controller do you
have? Does it require you to supply a controller driver with the Load
Drivers button (if you had to use F6 in XP you probably have to do so for
Vista)?

Try updating the bios. I would also take out the wireless card. This
could be causing the problem. I had a dlink wireless card during
install an Vista 64 wouldn't install. Wireless drivers for Vista are
darn near non existent or don't work when you do find them.

Re: Vista Compatibility

I'm using the ATI Sapphire Radeon X1300 256 (said on the box to be
"Vista Ready") on a system I just built, and I also experienced BSODs
when first installing Vista (32) RTM. Although I got past the BSOD
problem and got Vista installed OK, the ATI Catalyst Control Center for
the video card will not open. When trying to open it, Windows gives the
following error message: "Windows Vista does not support ATI Catalyst
Control Center. This problem was caused by a compatibility issue between
Windows Vista and ATI Catalyst Control Center. Contact ATI about
upgrades or other possible solutions to help make this program
compatible with this version of Windows." I have just registered the
card online with ATI and have filed a complaint about the situation just
this morning. I can find no drivers on their site to upgrade to, and am
rather unhappy with ATI about this. Hopefully, I will hear from them
soon. On the plus side: after about three reboots the BSODs went away
and haven't returned, and the card itself seems to be functioning for me.

Re: Vista Compatibility

Speaking of cards, if the OP is using dual SLI cards he should try removing
one during installation. Also reseating cards can sometimes help.

Re: Vista Compatibility

Update on my own situation:

I received a reply from ATI support, followed their instructions to
download an ATI Catalyst Control Center *beta* installation program for
Vista 32, then uninstall all ATI software shown in Add/Remove Programs,
then install the new beta. It seems to have worked and I believe (knock
on wood) my issues are resolved. :) Nevertheless, I suspect that the
OP's BSOD problems have something to do with his video card . . .

Re: Vista Compatibility

Forgot to mention, regarding my ATI Catalyst Control Center fix, that
installation of .NET 1.1 was also required *before* installing the beta
for Vista 32. (And also, that there is a separate, much larger, beta
installation file for ATI's CCC that covers both Vista 32 *and* 64).

Re: Vista Compatibility

Thanks for answers.

I retried again without all non essential card like wi-fi. I left just video
card as agp and no pci. Regarding ati driver I experienced the same problem
about the manage software, but this happen just attempting and update. The
system crash always at the same point, in the phase named "First Start of
Vista". I enclose a link with the pic of error

My hard disk is a normal samsung ide of about 250gb, I deactivated that on
sata, to avoid driver errors. Last chance it may be update bios

Re: Vista Compatibility

Others have reported that with a similar problem with ATI video cards that
they put in an older card for the install and put back the later card after
it was installed. Don't know if that is an option for you, but if it is it
is worth a try.

Re: Vista Compatibility

Actually I changed my video card rigth to be sure to install vista without no
problem, Infact before I removed a geforce4, and I installed ati 1300x which
report vista ready logo, and I tried a boot setup formatting disk. It's funny
that when I installed vista beta 2 on an old pc, I had no problem. Anyway
there are just 2 possibilities., one it can be and incompatibility with
asrock mb, or 2 maybe it's right the video card. I bet on mainboard.
Thanks. :)

Re: Vista Compatibility

Good luck. I know how frustrating it can be. I never was able to get a
boot record on a Hitachi SATA II drive when they first came out. Worked
great as a data drive.

If I am reading this correctly the problem is changing video cards
after install. Put the geforce back in and it should boot. If it does
uninstall the geforce drivers, shutdown and install the ati card. It
should boot and install vga drivers and then you can install the ati
drivers. I had the same problem only I had ati x1600 and went to evga
8800gts. Had to put the x1600 back in to get it to boot.
Off course I could be wrong if I interpreted your post wrong.

Re: Vista Compatibility

The problem could be that one, but there no reason to have the same when I
setup on formatted disk with a new clean installation.
