"Custom" icon in Quick Launch bar?

Vista Ultimate, SP1

Silly little issue: On my XP machine, if I add a website to my Quick Launch
bar by dragging the draggin the web page's icon from the IE Address Bar down
to my Quick Launch bar, the resulting icon on my QL bar is an image of the
website's icon. (For example, Amazon's is their ubiquitous A with the smile
underneath it.)

On my Vista machine, the resulting QL icon is the generic Internet
Explorer's "E".

It's not a big deal...well actually it is, because the unique icon's make
visual ID easier.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Re: "Custom" icon in Quick Launch bar?

Uh, I see how to rightclick on the QL icon (button?), click properties,
click on "Change Icon," but that just gives me choices of icons that reside
on my machine.

What I'm talking about is automatic on my XP machine: Drag the webpage's
icon directly from the IE Address window while viewing the web page to the
QL bar. This drops the shortcut there on the QL bar, and the icon is a
replica of that appears in the IE Address window....

Vista here, and I can drag a URL to my quick launch bar and the icon
stays the same.

One thing you might need to think about is that the icon you prefer is
in your Temp Internet Files initially and those are deleted when you
close IE (if you have it set to do that) or when you run a disk
cleanup.

You need to find that icon and copy it over to a directory of your
choosing/making, THEN do the change icon thing and browse to that
directory to find the icon you want.

Doing that should also fix the problem you are having - I think.

Re: "Custom" icon in Quick Launch bar?

you want the favicon.ico of that site...

in order to find that icon you will add a /favicon.ico to the address you
want.. the main domain.. for example for cnn.com is

http://www.cnn.com/favicon.ico

the best way to download the actual ico is to use a download manager

like freedownloadmanager.org or www.flashget.com

and add the address with the favicon to download in my example this:\

http://www.cnn.com/favicon.ico

by the way.. there is an idiot that’s original name-handle is spanky... but
it loves to take the identity of others because itself doesn’t have a real
identity and it has a total lack of self worth..

its suffering from many physiological problems.. in other words it’s a
nutcase! So if you see an idiot posting under my name... its not me.

thanks

Re: "Custom" icon in Quick Launch bar?

I kind knew it had something to do with a favicon...but any idea why on my
old machine they made their way to my QL bar without all the folderol? Just
by simply dragging?

Nope. Works both ways for me here and always has.

The favicon is stored in the internet explorer temporary internet files..

if you clean those, or if you use another browser like firefox you will
not see that icon in quicklaunch or the desktop

since to display it it must read the favicon in the internet explorers
temporary files..

please tell me if you have switched to another browser or you have some
cleaner to clean the temp files
