I posted this question in different sections for different reasons. one
reason was because I am not sure were to post this question. Another reason
is because I am trying to virtualize a legacy operating system on Windows
Vista using Microsoft Virtual PC and I seem to be having an issue with it.

What I am trying to do is virtualize Windows 2000 on my Windows Vista PC
using Microsoft Virtual PC. the only issue is that when i try to install
Windows 2000 on the Virtual PC i get an issue. it gives me an issues saying
that i cannot install the operating system because it did not come with the
computer or whatever. yet when i install it on the physical machine itself,
the computer will go through with the installation just fine.

I think i am having this particular issue because the installation CD i have
for windows 2000 is a OEM CD. what I am asking if anyone knows where I can
download an ISO image of a Windows 2000 installation CD that will work with
Microsoft Virtual PC. It would be nice if someone knows a place of where I
could download an ISO of the installation CD or if someone can just send me
a physical installation CD for windows 2000.

that Windows 2000 does not detect, made it so that it kept switching back
and forth between Vista and XP whenever I used those particular hardware
devices. another advantage of virtualizing Windows 2000 is that it works
faster, and plus it is more compatible with older applications that Windows
XP may or may not be compatible with.

so, can someone please help me with this issue that i am having. windows
vista just has too many program compatiility issues for its own good.

Hi Steven,

What you need is retail media with a Product Key. I doubt anyone will simply
give it to you, you'll have to peruse sites that may still sell it (might
try ebay) as it is no longer available through normal retail channels. The
only legit sources for downloading the .iso's would be via MSDN or Technet
subscriptions.

I just want the ISO image not an activation key. oddly i have two activation
keys. one was for a retail version but i lost the CD for it. and that one
was a multi-PC lisence. and the interesting thing was that i could use
either activation key with any of the CDs. but yet with XP or vista, each
activation key seems to be locked to a particular Windows installation CD.

Since I am starting my own PC repair company and all that microsoft knows
about, I think I may or may not be able to get them to send me a copy of
Windows 2000. I would purchase Windows 2000, but its not worth it for use on
Microsoft virual PC. I'll just keep using it on my tc4400. having two of the
same tablet PC is usefull. besides microsoft may snd me a copy of microsoft
since I do business with them at times through my company.

You can get a Windows 2000 download from MSDN. You will need to subscribe unless you already are.

Also you might find someone selling one on EBay

I was just hoping that someone could send me an ISO image of the Windows
2000 installation CD. I already have a valide activation key that would work
with it.

I have an OEM copy but OEM copy won't work with Microsoft Virtual Machine. I
need a Retail Installation CD. and I do not care what service pack revision
it is... and by the way I sadly lost my retail installation CD for Windows
2000. if I still had the CD this post would not exist.

at this point I'm starting to beta testing Windows 7. oddly at times I am
using virtual machine on the operating system. I'm virtualizing Windows XP
on that particular computer, but thats just for beta testing purposes. on my
primary machine, i wanna virtualize Windows 2000.

If you have a "retail" key just borrow the Win2K retail install CD from
another person. Your key will work fine with the borrowed disk.

you realize this page you gave me a link to, no longer applies to Windows
2000.

I believe microsoft started to mainsteam XP and vista a few years ago. it
seems they also discontinued replacementment services for windows 2000. at
least they still give monthly updates for this operating system.

windows XP and vista. yet, i do know a few people who are back tracking to
windows 98 for some odd reason.

well, since no one can really help me get an ISO image of Windows 2000. than
maybe you guess can help me with something else. i have another idea of how
i could virtualize Windows 2000, but i am not sure if it is possible.

well, right now i have a computer running windows 2000. my idea is to
possibly convert the windows 2000 hard drive partition into a .vhd file for
use with Microsoft virtual machine. my question is, is it even possible to
do that? and if it is how do I do that? and will someone please help me with
this?

Not a bad idea, Steven, but unlikely to be able to happen. Reason is the
hardware. The installation is using one set of drivers and a system file set
built based on that, and I doubt that it would match the virtualized
hardware of VPC even if there were some way of building a .vhd file from it.
