Cannot run Windows Update

Vista Home Basic. Trying to check for updates comes up with error 0x8007051a.
The link provided does not include this error number.
Each boot shows a "Configuring Updates" message. An immediate reboot after
successful log on shows the same message.
I have done a full System Recovery to rebuild the OS but it gives the same
error.

Naturally trying to install SP1 fails too.

Windows Update service is shown as "running".
Can anyone advise what my next step is?

Have a read of MS's Help and Support Page.

RE: Cannot run Windows Update

That support page is for downloads that don't install. It makes no mention
of not even being able to start Windows Update. When I start Windows Update
and then click "Check for Updates", the progtam fails with error 0x8007051a.
It has not asked for a Genuine Advantage check or displayed the "Express" or
"Custom" option.

Re: Cannot run Windows Update

Hi Doug,
I had a similar problem, found this while googleing, try the following, it
worked for me!
Good luck!
***********************************************
Here might be the fix for that problem :

Go to Start / All Programs / Accessories.

Right Click the 'Command Prompt' item and click the 'Run As Administrator'
option.

In the Command Prompt window, Paste the following command.

REGSVR32 %SYSTEMROOT%\SYSTEM32\WUAUENG.DLL

Press ENTER.

You should see a popup that says the command succeeded.

Exit the command prompt and try Windows Update again.

Let us know the results.
